Background/ Splash screen patch in the UK

Does anyone know of a DVD player available in the UK that can be patched to change the background/ splash screen?

You need a firmware image to modify, which means you need to get a player from a manufacturer that also updates/supplies firmware. And of course this will void the warranty and if you screw it up, will likely prevent the player from operating.

That should be enough to get you started. You could probably find more using Google (or whatever search engine you prefer).

I have Googled and forum searched for a while and the guides and companies you have suggested don't seem to be available in the UK.

You will likely have to do more specific searches based on whichever brands are available in your area. You aren't likely to find much info as this isn't done by many people. At best it is something to play around with on an old DVD player that you don't care if it gets screwed up.

And it is NOT a patch. You will be downloading and modifying the firmware, which oftens involves changing hex values. You will also need to create the new image...they are often low res, like 640x480, limited to 8 or 16 colors, and must under a certain size. File size is important because most players have a small space to load the firmware, so if you new firmware is too large, the player won't be able to load the firmware.
