  1. Does anyone know of a software DVD player that works with Windows 2000 advanced server? I've tried WinDVD (Bogus Can't render image due to resolution error), InterActual (same bogus error), PowerDVD 4.0 (gives me a more helpful error indicating that I am running in a terminal services session, and therefore it will disable playback)...actually, I'm on the console, but, of course, I'm running advanced server, and terminal services is installed (because I use the machine as a server box from my lap-tops)...ideas welcomed.

  2. What error code are you getting eg "Error Code: "80900007". When you installed it did you login as adminstrator?

Are you running it from the server or a workstation? Not an expert here but I know it can make a difference.

  3. I'm running on the server (console)..i.e. I'm sitting at the machine which has Win200 advanced server installed, and I'm working on the video screen/keyboard which is physically plugged into the back to the machine. PwerDVD 4.0 gives the the error "PowerDVD is running through Terminal Services, Media content playback will be prohibited". I have Terminal Services installed on the machine, and frequntly use it....It allows me to log in from another machine on the network and create a whole new desktop, which persists between sessions...great for doing video editing in the comfort of the living room on the lap-top, while using the power of my server machine. In this case, the error is simply not true, since I'm physically on the console. I'm thinking the software may be confused by the fact that I also have two video cards in the machine (new 32 meg GEforce2 AGP for main display, and my old PCI All-in-wonder pro for video capture). Both cards are live and I have two monitors running, one from each card, but I disable the old card from "display properties" before running PowerDVD, so that shouldn't affect it. I can dual-boot to windows ME, so when my current encoding is done, I'll try to re-install PowerDVD under ME just to confirm that it's win2000 advanced server rather than my complicated video setup that's causing it.

I just tried running a dvd from the harddisc through my network and PowerDVD picked it up an played it. I'm running Win XP Pro. I only have one video card tho.

I think your assesment of the server is correct, tho I'm not sure why PowerDVD would play with a network but not a server. Sorry I can't help you there.

I think that XP Pro is better in the area of "networking" tho. I tried Win 2000 Server and had to many problems with it. So, I waited for XP. In my own opinion I think XP Pro is better. I have complete control of my entire system from my main box or to my main box. Its really nice to be able to run all my major programs from wherever I am without having them installed on every unit. The new internet feature is really nice also.

I also found a site that has the PowerDVD upgrade. It seems to be offline at the moment for maintenance. http://www.warp2search.net/index.php.
Go to the download section and see if you can find it. You will notice some performance improvements with the patch. The patch is 1228.
