I have been researching this problem for 2 days now and still no luck!!
Every time I drag .rm files to the ffmpegx window it freezes up. Also when I try to play the file in Mplayer it only plays the audio, though plays perfectly in the Real Player.
What is wrong?? I am obviously missing an rm video codec even though I have "installed" reallib to library>application support>ffmpegx (copied the folder). I also cannot for the life of me figure out how to install the additional codecs into mplayer, which I have downloaded (libmp3lame-osx-universal-3.97). Mplayer came with a GUI and I cant figure out how to get it so i can type in code (although that probably would just have me staring at the computer for 2 more days trying to figure out what to do with that window). I also have no clue what "/usr/local/lib" is, as I am new to mac, so I can't install it manually (if that is possible).
Can anybody help me convert rm and stop me (almost literally) pulling my hair out?? I don't even mind someone suggesting another free encoder if it works, even though I have heard this is the best one...

Download the .zip file, unzip it. From ffmpegX's self-installer window, use the Locate button to point the installer to your unzipped file 'mplayer'. On installing, the mplayer file will be manipulate and copied to its Library location, to make it available to ffmpegX. mplayer doesn't need additional codecs (libmp3lame), except for reallib if you convert real media files.
You can verify if this step is done correctly by dropping a test media file (e.g. XviD AVI) on ffmpegX and pressing the Play button. This should start the CLI mplayer and play the file. Press 'q' to quit.
2/ For Reallib (for Intel Macs) you'll need to download the Binary Codec Package - Mac OS X x86 (originally for MPlayer OS X 1.0rc1 from that site), and use that for the (different!) mplayer that ffmpegX will use. The Binary Codec Package is an installer package file. Run it. You can make it useful for the other mplayer by moving the installed reallib files from "/usr/local/lib" to "/Library/Application Support/ffmpegX". The directory "/usr" is invisible in Mac OS X, so navigate to "/usr/local/lib" by using the Finder's Go menu, selecting "Go to Folder...", then type "/usr/local/lib" and press <enter>. You'll see a folder named "codecs". Move this folder into "/Library/Application Support/ffmpegX" and rename it "reallib".
You can verify if this step is done correctly by dropping a test Real Media file (foo.rm) on ffmpegX and pressing the Play button. This should start the CLI mplayer and play the file. Press 'q' to quit.
