If it is the basis for a restoration project, the JVCs are generally well regarded

Those are all just plain VCRs. They won't do much in terms of restoration.

The JVC S-VHS has a few filters, but not all.

Sony and Panasonic other great choices for VHS players.

That's a step up from my HR-S7965EK, which is an excellent high end machine.

Line TBC removes grain and chroma noise. Note: This TBC only removes image noise.

    Stabilizer, if needed.

Picture modes, to help hide noise (NORM, SOFT, SHARP)

R3 edge enhancement (fake detail added)

Audio "filters" (select HiFi or norm track, whichever sounds better), not really a filter, but few devices let you pick the mono/linear audio track when HiFi exists.

The only way to remove macrovision (or errors that are not copy protection, but still trip up protection detection), is to insert a full-frame TBC between the VCR and capture device. This TBC does no cleaning of image, but purifies the signal.

The lower end 3000 and 5000 have basic filters. No TBC. They're better than VHS VCRs, but still not the good ones.
