Burned an old VCR straight to DVD-R using a VCR/DVDR combo unit. Seemed OK. I then "Finalized" the disc so it's readable in standalone DVD players (and my computer). Now the problem is that when I try to make multiple copies of the disc I get errors with the programs I use.
First I tried DVDShrink. It analyzed the whole DVD (with video preview), got to 97% done and then I got a "Faliure to read D:/"; "data error (cyclic redundancy check)". Then the program shuts down.
Then tried with Nero Recode and had the same problem.
Then I just tried to copy the Video_TS file right to the harddrive to try to dump on a DVDR that way and that didn't work either.
Any ideas?

The error you describe usually has to do with a problem with the media you're using.
DVDFab HD Decrypter might be able to muscle it's way through the bad spot on the disc in order to get you a copy.
If that doesn't work, you might have to copy the VHS tape again using a different disc. -
I've found that more than one title on a DVDR won't work in DVDShrink. As mentioned....I would just rip it to the computer with DVDDecrypter or ImgBurn.....run it through FixVTS for good measure...then burn them from there.

thanks for the tips guys!
here's an update: first I reburned the VCR to a different brand DVDR. Went from Memorex DVD-R to Fujifilm DVD+R.
Tried DVDShrink again. Same error.
Tried NeroRecode again. Same error.
Tried DVDFab HD Decrypter and didn't get too far. Interface was a bit confusing.
Tried IMGBurn and got the same "cyclic redundancy check: error.
Here's the deal now. The IMGBurn guide says "Firstly make sure your Vob, Ifo and Bup files are in a folder called VIDEO_TS". When I open the DVD on the computer, it does have all the files, but the BUP and IFO files have that Windows icon that means unrecognized format.
I've even added all the files individually in IMGBurn and I'm still getting errors. Arrrgh!
Must be something translated from the VCR/DVDR unit itself. -
Did you run it through FixVTS as was suggested?...

Can't get it off the DVDR. Maybe that's the reason why FixVTS didn't work.
Samsung DVD-VR330. It plays on other machines but I can't rip the thing!!!!!
I copied about 90 min of footage from the VCR tape.
Who knows at this point? My whole goal was to avoid having to make every copy in real time from the actual VCR tape. Of course will all the time I've been wasting on this, I could have made 15 dubs!
I wonder if it's still the fact that Windows doesn't recognize the IFO and BUP files in the "Details" view of the "Video_TS" folder.
I think I'm giving up. Although, it'd be nice to figure out for the future.
Thanks for looking out, guys! -
It needs to be read using a better drive. Software changes will not help.

lordsmurf, you're saying all these problems are stemming from an inferior dvd-drive on my computer?
-
I think he's talking about your inferior DVDR/VCR combo unit.....

I mean....if you had a complete CRAP DVD Recorder like a Cyberhome
or something like that your troubles would not surprise me but Samsung
can't be THAT bad.....in this day and age. I'd love to get my hands on a disc
like that....I love a challenge.....just like i did with my dad's Cybercrap recorder

This assumes the disc is "good" (it can play fully at the less-than-1x realtime playback on a DVD player). By "good" I mean "good enough to recover". But it's still a pretty crappy burn, all things considered.
You'll need to ISO read, and ISO write, using DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn.
DVD Shrink, Recode, etc ... not the correct software for the task, way off base, left field. Those are transcoders, different than copying discs.
You should fill out your profile, the computer specs, so we know what you have. I have BTC drives, some of the best readers available, for dealing with tough discs. And I mostly use Pioneer burners, some of the best around for burning discs.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn = no good
Windows Copy and Paste - Drag and Drop = no good
DVDFabDecrypter = no good
IsoBuster = no good (bad sector)
I even tried to drag and drop using my laptop instead of the desktop and got same error.
Last ditch effort will be to try the Verbatim discs. I'm also going to give this Fuji disc to a guy at work who does this stuff for a living. Let's see how a "pro" does.
Guys, thanks again for the help. Couldn't get this frustrated without cha
I'm also going to try to post my specs..... -

Gee, maybe the studios should invest in Samsung units to thwart copying their releases?????? SHHHHHHH....
