Hello all,
New guy here. I am trying to back-up dvd9 to dvd9(dvd+r). Everytime I try to do this, I get an I/O error message. I am using dvd decrypter. When I put the blank dvd9 in and press the start button the message at the bottom of the decrypter window says it is searching for sectors then a widow pops up giving me the error message. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

I don't know what movie you are trying to back up, but DVD Decrypter has not been updated for a couple of years. Most likely your DVD has some form of copy protection that DVD Decrypter cannot handle.
If you want free software, I suggest you try using something like DVDFab HD Decrypter. If you don't mind paying for something, AnyDVD will work in conjunction with DVD Shrink (also free, but not updated for a while) or DVD Decrypter. I am not sure about DVD Decrypter, because I have never used both together, but given how it works, it should work OK with AnyDVD. However, I have used AnyDVD and DVD Shrink together.
Both AnyDVD and DVDFab HD Decrypter keep their software updated to handle the latest copy protection schemes. -
Sure, a few suggestions.
If you are using the old DVD Decrypter, it's not the tool for newer DVDs.Try DVDFab HD Decrypter. You also need the very latest version some times. Some DVDs have particularly difficult to backup encryption. They may require a bit more work, depending on which of your DVD videos you are backing up.
Once you have decrypted your DVD to your hard drive, use ImgBurn in 'Build' mode and burn the VIDEO_TS folder directly to a DVD-9 disc. For DVD-9, I would only use Verbatim DL+ discs. No other brands have shown any consistent success to date. ImgBurn is also one of the best DL burner programs out there and is the successor to DVD Decrypter, without the decryption. And it's freeware.
And welcome to our forums. -
So little information to go on. Even for a first post, if you had read the rules it says that the more information you give, the better the chance of getting a decent answer.
So how about starting with
1. The source. Commercial or burnt disc ?
2. If a commercial disc, which one ?
3. What exactly is the error message ? It never ceases to amaze me how many people say "I got an error message" and then either don't post it, or say "I forgot what it says" or "I didn't bother to read it". Error messages are there for a reason, and often provide the details you need for a solution.
In general, DVD Decrypter is no longer useful for ripping newer releases, especially in the US and parts of Europe. DVDFab HD Decrypter is preferred, or you can use DVD Decrypter if you also run the latest version of AnyDVD. Both DVDFab HD Decrypter and AnyDVD need to be updated frequently. There are still many releases that can be ripped with just decrypter or even DVD Shrink, however there is no way to know which until you begin.
The burning engine fro DVD Decrypter has been ripped out, enhanced and upgraded and is now called Imgburn. It is the preferred freeware tool for burning DL discs, and is very reliable.Read my blog here.

Hell o all,
Thanks for the quick replies. I downloaded the new programs (dvdfab hd & imgbrn). Everything went well until I attemted to back-up Wild Hogs on my Memorex dvd+9 disc. I am getting another message error. The message is as follows:
DeviceloControl(FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME) Failed!
Device: (1:0:0) TSST corp DVD+-RW TS-L632D DE03(E : (ATA)
Unable to lock volume for exclusive access.
Reason: Access denied.
I am also getting a Power Calibration Area error
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris -
Just got another error message. This one says:
I/O Error!
Devise: (1:0:0) TSST corp DVD+-RW TS-L632D DE03(EATA)
SciStatus: 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition
CDB:
Interpretation: Send DVD Structure - DVD+R DL Boundary Information
Sense Area:
Interpretation: Power Calibration Area Error -
Those errors sound like the burner doesn't like the DVD media. What are you using? Power Calibration is done before each regular burn by burning a special calibration area near the center of the disc. This sets the burner speed and laser power to the media.

if you're not using VERBATIM DVD+R DUAL LAYER media that could be why you're getting error msgs and burning coasters.
what brand is your dvd burner? -
The brand of burner is TSST corp DVD+-RW TS-L632D DE03
After aborting the burn the error message said:
failed to write sectors 0-31 power calibration error.
Another messege says:
Cannot format medium - Incompatible medium. -
Memorex DL = crap
The general consensus here is that while a few lucky souls have been able to use other media, the only truely reliable media is Verbatim +R DL media made in Singapore. Anything else is hit and miss (mostly miss), as you are discovering.Read my blog here.

Hello,
Thanks all for the help. I went out today and bought the verbatim dvd9. All is working now. I do have one more question though. When Imgburn starts to write the dvd9 it requires me to make a choice in reference to layer break. The options are as follows:
1. Ignore the layer break
2. Seamless
3. I'm not sure what the third one is but, I think it ignores the iso/bup files????
Which one is the right choice.
Thanks again,
Chris -
You might look at this guide from the ImgBurn site, about 2/3 the way down the page. It discusses setting the layer break position. Really very easy and critical for seamless playback: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=4643
