Hi Im new to this and would like some help. I just purchased a 60 inch sony rear projection tv with 2 hdmi inputs. My current reciever has no hdmi inputs or outputs and my current dvd player doesnt either.I'm getting hd sattelite next week and plan to buy a 1080 upconvert dvd player in a couple days with hdmi outputs ,so for my best performance what should I use for video on both sattelite unit and the dvd player and can I still send the audio seperately to the reciever with coaxial digital out put from the dvd player while using the hdmi ouputs for video whats my best setup for optimal performance ,.thank you, Alan

You need to ask these questions to your sattelite provider before you sign anything. The new box should have HDMI+HDCP but audio needs clarification. Get this right before you commit the $$$.

Settings depend on the technology in your TV. What is it? Model number please.

Best to separate an SPDIF audio feed to the receiver from the tuner or DVD player.

The sony model is the sxrd kds-60A2020S So I should have HDMI and HDCP on the sattelite box send the video signal to the tv via these and the signal from the dvd player via the HDMI output to the tv and my audio from the dvd player to the reciever will be ok with the coaxial digial connection?

Should be good but the receiver needs S/PDIF audio from each source. Routing tuner or Blu-Ray DVD HDMI through the receiver can cause problems if the receiver isn't fully HDCP compliant. Few are. So it is best to send audio as S/PDIF coax or optical. Upscaling DVD players seldom use HDCP so those can be routed through the receiver.

  5. I run HDMI from a cable box to an HDTV. I also run optical digital from the cable box to the receiver. Unfortunately the cable box will only send digital audio to one port at a time. Most of the time I have it set to send audio to HDMI but when I want to use the reciever I have to manually change the cable box settings. The HDTV has a digital audio output, but thanks to HDCP requirements, it downmixes to stereo.
