  3. From what I have read and seen, no. The Playstation is not powerful enough to decode the MPEG files on without the use of the card. I did hear a rumor of software that allowed you to play Video CD on a Playstation but I heard the quality was so horrible that you wouldn't want to use it. Of course that was a rumor. Do yourself a favor and just drop the $44 for the video card add on and enjoy it.

  4. just to give you an idea. i have made vcd's for the dreamcast which i think is more powerful than the ps1 and they looked like crap. so i really don't know how much better if any they would be on a ps1. btw, if anyone else reads this post and has the vid card for the ps1 can you tell me if it is any good and if its decent where can i get one????

  5. PSX uses MJPEG encoding (not MPEG1) for full motion video in some of its games. If you look at WipeOutXL for PSX, the intro video looks pretty damn nice in MJPEG format (no motion blocks and not blurry!).

However, you need to find out how to encode in this format at another site. I saw it somewhere ... long long ago ... forgot where. I believe you can use PicVideo codecs for MJPEG (perhaps encode with VirtualDub?).

However, I have not researched the particulars in getting your video to play like in a PSX game. It should be possible since I used to know some people that copied PSX games and hacked/personalized the graphics and audio/video in the games.

Search for PSX tools/video on Google.

To do that you have to convert to STR. There are several programs which can do this, just use google. The quality is horrible and so is the compression. A typical movie would take at least 5 cdrs and playing a disk like this will eventually kill your psx laser. The laser is not meant to spin continuously for 2+ hrs.

The reason vcds didnt play well on the dreamcast because all of the decoding was done through software on the disk itself. I can assure you this is impossible on the psx since it is so much less powerful. With a video card the psx actually makes a decent vcd player, quality-wise that is. As I said earlier playing vcds on the psx greatly shortens the life of your laser.
