question about VOB compliant files to make DVD

Following is part of a guide to convert Youtube videos to DVD.

1. Right click in SUPER to open the file you just downloaded, Add Multimedia File(s)
2. Select vob DVD Compliant under Select the Output Container....

7. Add the DVD VOB file in for example Tmpgenc DVD Author or NeroVision or Ulead DVD Workshop and author and burn it to a DVD.
Done.

My question is, what is the point of choosing "VOB DVD Compliant"? Why not just choose regular AVI?
My burning tool, (see screenshot) according to the circled words, will not make a DVD from any file, whether it is VOB DVD Compliant or not. One still must use something like TMPGEnc DVD Author, which will make DVDs directly from AVI. Or for that matter, why use Super in the first place? It seems like you could just use the video directly from the KeepVid and put into TMPGEnc DVD Author to make the DVD.

If you have a Divx/Xvid set top player, sure, just convert them to one of those formats. But if you have a regular DVD player, they will have to MPEG format, the proper audio and framerate most times, and be authored to DVD format. You need more than the VOBs to create a DVD.

And you're correct for Nero, you need NeroVision to author. TDA won't make a DVD from a AVI either, unless it's the newest version, otherwise, it just authors.

But you can convert them to DVD compliant MPEG format with SUPER if you like, then use a freeware authoring program like GUI for dvdauthor, then burn them with ImgBurn.

There are lots of other methods and tools to do most of this also. If a program like FAVC can accept the YouTube files, you could do it with a freeware all-in-one converter. But YouTube probably doesn't use a simple format that's easy to convert, so SUPER may be a good starting point.

Thank you for the answer. One more question. Is it possible to use TMPGEnc DVD Author3 to edit an AVI without authoring to DVD? It seems like when I use TMPGEnc DVD Author3 to edit an AVI,, the only choice that is to author to DVD. Suppose I don't want to do that. I just want to edit the AVI and then just leave it as AVI. Is it possible tp do that with TMPGEnc DVD Author3?
If not, is there another software that can frame by frame edit an AVI?

Sorry, I only have TDA 1.6. But there are several video editors for AVI type video. I use VirtualDub Mod most times. Frame accurate editing is usually based on the spacing between keyframes. With VD Mod, you can only cut on the keyframes. Unfortunately, Xvid and probably Divx uses a keyframe interval of about 300 frames by default, so frame accurate editing is all but impossible. It's a problem with the format, not the editors. I use DV AVI format sometimes, and every frame is a keyframe with it. Very nice to edit.

The newest version of VirtualDub, 1.7, I think, can use 'Smart Rendering' and that allows you to cut on any frame, even with Divx/Xvid. The program then just re-encodes the cut points. It might be a good compromise if you are using Divx/Xvid for a final format.
