  1. I'm convinced it's DVD9 I want to backup my movies on. I am going to stock a few hundreds of Verbatim MKM-001s (2.4x) as recommended by many reputable forums.

I will be burning DVD9 media using ImgBurn software and NEC ND-4550A drive.

The problem is I am currently working at Hong Kong where cheap media and fake ones are common place. I wonder if you could kindly identify this Verbatim being sold is the real Verbatim, MKM-001s (2.4x).

The first picture shows Verbatim MKM-001 from supermedistore.com - a highly reputable store in the US. I'd think that is the real one. The next three pictures show Verbatim MKM-001 from a reputable store in Hong Kong from which I will be buying. As far as I can tell both Verbatims are the same and real. Can you identify and advise if the Verbatim shown on the Hong Kong store's picture the real thing? The Verbatim sold at the Hong Kong store is made in Singapore.

    Thank you for advising
Hope my picture attachments are allowed on this forum

The only way to know for sure, is to check the media ID after you buy them.

However, I was under the impression that the "fake" discs didn't have the name and graphics on the discs (note the bottom picture). Fakes typically are just blank.

Verbatim has been faked all the way to the labels in the past, though we didn't get them in the USA (a real problem in Europe and Asia).

The only real way to tell is to buy a pack and examine the hub serial numbers.

I have a feeling these are NOT fake, but it's based on gut feeling alone.

    I live in Hong Kong.
I haven't used any DL media but I do use Verbatim SL.

I had mixed results with the "Made in Taiwan" Verbatim.
That had media code DVD+R:MCC-004-000 (as reported by DVD Identifier)
Some of these ended up coasters.

But Verbatim "Made in Japan" turns out to be Taiyo Yuden,
    media code DVD+R:YUDEN000-T03-000
All of these perfect so far.

    I found these at
Oion Computer Shop, shop 213 at 298 Hennessy Rd,
    and also
Pro-City, shop 54 LG, Golden Arcade.

What's the "reputable" shop you found?

I tend to think that fake media is less common in the Golden Arcade, many hard core geeks there who would out them in short order.

Anyway, just buy a pack of 5 and test them. I wouldn't buy batches of hundreds till I was very sure they were perfect.

I can't speak to the authenticity of those Verbatim DVD+R DL media based on the pictures. You might try contacting the Verbatim company and ask them if there's any way to verify. They have a telephone number inside the label on spindles where you can call them for returning defective discs. I found them responsive.

However I want to mention that Verbatim DVD+R DL "Made in India" discs became predominant in the USA after about July 2007, and they are inferior to the "Made in Singapore" kind which were formerly sold here. The Singapore discs gave me less than 1% coasters while the India discs are producing 5% coasters. So if you can get authentic Singapore discs there in Hong Kong, that's probably the best choice.

And if so, I would be curious about their prices for shipment to the USA, because I really don't want to buy any more of the India type! Even Supermediastore which you mention probably only sells the India kind here in the USA now.
