I'm trying to convert my wmv files to mpeg or avis using total video converter but TVC keeps freezing after I select the output format. I've tried several different wmv videos and tried converting them to different outputs.

Something that might help determine my problem is that if I rename the vid with a mpg file extension, the program works perfectly. It's very strange.

Have you tried any other tools? Latest virtualdub-mpeg2 supports some wmvs. Tmpgenc Xpress supports wmv and can convert directly to mpg and avi.

I convert wmvs to dv-avi with Windows Movie Maker, in the last output step select other settings: dv-avi. Then I can convert the DV-AVI to other formats using most tools.

If the WMVs are DRM-protected it wont work with any tools though.

You mean you rename video.wmv to video.mpg?

Seems like all your problems stem from the same root - some bad codec / Direct Show filter somewhere. The only thing I can think of, that would change if you change the extension, is the filter chain that gets used. You could try graphedit and see what happens (what filters are used) when you open your files. Maybe that can give you some clue as to what's broken.
