  1. When encoding a DVD to MPEG1 using FlaskMPEG (This is for PAL settings) can you get better quality?. I'm using all defaults for bbmeg, only changing in Video Stream Setting the video type to VideoCD. I'm asking this because I've noticed original VCD's that I have are a lot better quality than what I'm achieving. When the camera is moving left to right (fast or slow it doesn't matter) the picture becomes really grainy. Is there any fix for this?
    Thanks.

In the advanced settings tab for BB, you can adjust the vector lengths, and pell movement to help improve the quality. It will slow down the encoding process, but the output is better.

The reason why most original VCD's look good are that they are encoded from the original source. They go through the same process as DVD's. DVD is already compressed, your just compressing it again. Add to that, most DVD's, especially older ones, are pretty low quality.

You can see the properties for the vob stream. Even though DVD says 9.8mbs max, most I've seen only obtain an average bit rate of 5.5-6. Not much better than SVCD.

  3. Thanks for the reply disturbed, I went in and had a look and it went straight into the too hard basket. I know I'm not putting in the hard yards but any chance someone can give us the settings for pell and vector movements they use for Pal version for better quality.
    Thanks again.

  4. bbMPEG although delivering OK quality MPEG-1, is not one of the best MPEG-1 encoders. In terms of working with FlaskMPEG, the Panasonic MPEG Encoder Adobe Premiere plug-in works very well and delivers excellent quality.

    Damn you Vitualis
    You beat me to it.

If you get the Panasonic plugin, just rename it so it ends with .cm.flask.

Most would agree that Panasonic is a great (if not best) mpeg1 encoder.
