Id like to take a movie I have in AVI format and cut scenes from it, add them together then and add an mp3 for background music. whats a free and easy software to use?

Windows Movie Maker.
Supports AVIs for input, cuts/trims and can import mp3 audio.
Limitations are output formats - DV AVI or WMV. -
What format is the file and what format are you outputting to? Are you saving to an NTFS or FAT32 file drive? (If the output file exceeds 4GB it will be problematic on a FAT32 drive.)
(I haven't had problems with multigigabyte DV AVI files) -
At 700MB it's a good guess that the file is a Divx or Xvid AVI. I would use VirtualDUb in Direct Stream Copy mode with Smart rendering enabled. It's not a full featured editor but it deals with that type of file well.

I download it but its not very user friendly. Is there a guide on this site to help with what Im looking to do? I cant seem to find that particular one.

Or install the Panasonic DV Codec and save the video as DV for importing into WMM. Note : you will need at least 13 GB for each hour of DV video.
