I do a lot of CD and DVD burning, though the latter are as often assemblages of transcoded AVI files as they are properly formatted DVDs. I've had good luck in recent years with low-cost standalone boxes from Pioneer and Phillips being able to play a wide range of file types, but now that I need a replacement unit, I don't know what the current models are that can play (a) 5.1 surround-encoded discs, (b) DTS-encoded discs, and (c) AVI files that have not been transcoded to DiVX or XViD. If I had to choose among capabilities, I'd go for the 5.1/DTS capability, and just go through the AVI transcoding process when I need to. (Most of the AVIs I acquire do need transcoding anyway, so that won't be a huge sacrifice...)

Would like to keep this under $200, but whatever...

    tnx, BB

You can perform a search in the DVD Players section. Most players now support DD5.1 and DTS, so you will mainly be searching for a Divx player. You can get a list of Divx certified players at Divx.com.

Take a look at the Oppo players. Excellent video quality and very good Divx support. http://oppodigital.com/
