My friend asked that I post this since his internet is off.

I am running Final Cut 4.5 HD on a MAC G5. The computers drive has about 49 gigs of free space, but I capture all my footage on external drives anyway for more space. The computer has 4 gigs of memory. the maximum it can have. Recently, when I capture footage, it goes for about 5 minutes and then freezes up each time I try to capture. I have to force quit. It puts a huge file on my ext. drive which is unreadable. I dump it immediately because it almost fills my entire drive. I have tried using 3 different ext. drives and it still happens. I dumped and re-installed my Final Cut and it still happened. All the other Final Cut functions are working. Only the logging is where I have trouble. It seems like it is a computer problem, not software. Everything else on the computer is functioning normally. I also ran a [verify disc] proceedure and [restore permissions]. It said that the drive checks out okay. The problem still occurs. Any ideas what it could be?

    Thankyou

Capture to an internal drive then copy the file to the external drive. Best if the internal drive is defragged first and is not the same drive with the OS.

If you don't have space on the internal drive, move your junk to the external drive then defrag the internal drive.

    James,
has your friend ran FCP Rescue?

FCP Rescue will fix the permissions in FCP,
that disc Utility will not fix, as it looks
primarily at the System Prefs and frameworks.

FCP writes its own firewire and quicktime preferences
related to capture and scratch drives. FCP Rescue
repairs or replaces them from a good backup.
