  1. Well, I'm a little confused on this one and I seriously doubt there are any guides for this. I came across an EXE video file. It plays in Windows Media Player and seems to work just fine. Doesn't have any viruses or trojans in it either. I think it's a very odd format for a video file to be in, but whatever. Renaming it to an avi doesn't work. Basically, I don't want this to remain an EXE file. I'd like it to be in a video file format. I have no idea how to go about doing this which is why I'm posting here. Is there any way to convert this file, or am I just stuck with it?

Depends on the way the file was created. A lot of times, the EXE is just a shell for the video file and the player - once you click on the .EXE, the files unpack and the player and video can be found in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\<your_name>\Local Settings\Temp\

Even when the environment~variables TEMP and TMP have been both reset
to the old and good "C:\TEMP"

  4. Well, it certainly isn't in either of those areas. Video file is 170MB and my Local Settings folder isn't even 1/4rd of that, and I don't even have a C:Temp folder.

    Anything else it could be?

Maybe a bink video exe created with Rad Video Tools that maybe can open and extract the video also.

IIRC, .swf video too can be wrapped in a .exe.

  9. Well, I'm glad you all have plenty of ideas, but sadly none of them are correct so far.

Tried WinRAR before I even started this thread. It says it's not an archive.

Rad Video Tools can't even open the EXE file to convert it. I tried several settings and such, but they all resulted in the same error.

G-Spot doesn't really tell me anything other than it's an EXE file. It does say "Mime Type: application/OCTET-STREAM" but I don't know what that means.

My C Drive doesn't change size before, during, or after playback of the file. I would think this means that it's not unpacking it to the C drive at least. Could be one of my other 2 drives, but I haven't checked yet. I know that the temp folders I have on my other drives don't change either, so it'd have to be in some other folder.

    Any other ideas?

EDIT: Wow, nevermind, I found the file. Apparently it was on my C drive. I guess that's what I get for installing Windows Updates before I opened this file. My Windows folder increased in size, but I thought it was just due to the updates. Apparently this video file was hiding in the "C:\WINDOWS\system32" folder. I only found it when I decided to search my drives for an AVI file with the same name as the EXE. I got lucky in that they used the same name. Thanks for all the help you guys gave me.
