I would like to put together a series of photos to display as a slide show on a DVD. The height, of course, will be 480.
Is the ppi of these images relevant if they're going to DVD?

The ppi or dpi is not important for video. I usually use 100 dpi/ppi because it makes cropping in Photoshop easier, 7.2" x 4.8" @ 100 dpi/ppi are the same as 720 x 480 pixels.................
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........
