My DVD player does not load or open the tray, and then freezes with some funky characters on the LCD. What happens is, I turn on the DVD player and then hit either the standby button or open button, it goes through the sequence like it was loading/opening tray, but then it freezes. I have tried holding down the open button, but nothing. Anyone have this problem. I think something happened with my firmware, and now I can't get it to go past the funky characters. Nothing is showing up on the TV either.

How old is your player? They don't really build them to last these days. Consumers have made it clear that they want DVD players to be as cheap and as thin as possible. The pressure to be cheap means that manufacturers use cheap components that aren't designed to last. The pressure to be thin means that you can put cooling fans in DVD players, so they have to air cool. If you don't have a DVD player in a well ventilated spot, the heat will eventually burn it out. If you can get 3 years out of a cheap DVD player these days you've done well. Usually when players start misbehaving, it's best to just throw them away and replace them.
