I'm trying to encode the contents of a VIDEO_TS folder into a single DIVx file

I've been following the step by step guide at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/videots_divx.html
but every time I encode it only grabs the first .VOB and encodes that. I'm sure I'm missing something very basic, but I've read the guide and tried encoding a number of times to only get the first VOB file. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    1. You should open (select as source) the VIDEO_TS folder, not a VOB file inside it. It should say "VIDEO_TS" in the Source Format 'screen' of the Summary tab.
    2. You should use a mencoder preset to encode from a VIDEO_TS folder. Other presets won't be able to process VIDEO_TS folders. If you need another preset, you should merge the feature into a single VOB file.
    3. Update your bookmarks for the website to www.ffmpegx.com, as the site homepage.mac.com/major4/ is depreciated and might be less up-to-date.

well, I could've sworn I was doing just that, but after reading your post, the encoding seems to be working! Thanks much, Case.

sorry but when you convert video ts folders to a movie file there are no chapters, its just the movie itself with none of the DVDs capabilities

FWIW, however, Handbrake does have something called Chapter Markers. http://handbrake.m0k.org/trac/wiki/ChapterMarkers

I haven't tried them out, however.

Hi! I'm have been trying to convert video_ts to divx file but after about 60 per cent thru ffmepx just stops as if it is complete. I have tried a few times but the result is always the same - ffmpeqx will stop after about 60 percent complete. Upon checking the movie, everything seems to be fine but it is just not complete. I was hoping it will work and then pay for a license. Is this the reason? I have to pay first to have a full working version? Thank you anyone who can help me.

It should finish the conversion whether or not you've paid the shareware fee, so there is some problem. Premature termination is most often caused by a source file that has an error of some kind.

Click on the "i" button in the Progress pane to see the logfile. There will be useful information about what is causing ffmpegx to fail.

Also, play the original file near the 60% point and see if you find any anomalies.

Finally, for conversion into Divx, you may wish to try D-Vision3. It is freeware, and seems to handle conversions with fewer problems.

Thank you. I look at the i and cannot understand what has happened. The finish product is superb up till the 60 per cent mark and than it just abruptly stop. Will try with another movie and also D-vision. Very much appreciated your help.

What did the logfile say at termination? Surely it said something...
