I'm new to this forum and have little experience working with video.
I have a showreel (for Games music) which is only 5.30 in length and includes audio. I plan to present the video as part of an enhanced CD (to include audio tracks for CD players) so would need it to be a file size of about 400 MB.
I produced the video on imovie but initially found compatibility problems with the video on PC's. Friends informed me to bounce the original DV file (@1.4 Gb) using my PC instead to avoid this problem.
Having tried numerous times I have not found a solution that looks ok or works on Windows Media Player, Quicktime etc....Bearing in mind I'm paying for the copying and packaging I need to ensure the video will play on various software. I've been told AVI is the safest format for this but have found it difficult to get a file down to size. Because the footage mainly comprises in-game graphics the end product doesn't need to be super slick.
I'm using a freebie piece of video conversion software at the moment.
Please any help would be gtreatly appreciated as I have a deadline looming!

I've just got a version (185mb) that runs on windows media player and VLC but not on quicktime....which I'm assuming only runs mov's. Is there a file type that is compatible with all the most common bits of software or is there always going to be codec (windows media player) or compatility (quicktime) issues?

god I'm crap at this....forgot to mention the file was an MPEG...doesn't play on quicktime though?

mpeg-1 should play in Quicktime, however I believe mpeg-2 needs a license.
Mpeg-1 is probably the closest to universal. Both platforms should play it back without the need for further software. It does have limitations regarding quality at higher resolutions.
Your other choice is to use sorenson or AVC in a quicktime (.mov) container, and include the quicktime 7.x installer for people who don't have it.Read my blog here.
