Buy a new player. They don't last forever, and they aren't worth getting repaired.

Yes, that sounds exactly like the symptoms my first DVD player showed. First, it gave up playing pressed DVDs. Then DVD-R started to fail, to pretty soon just refusing to accept anything but CD / CD-R disks. It went into the garbage bin.

DVDs and CDs use a different laser in the player. The DVD laser either has a dirty lens or is dead or almost dead. DVD players aren't really built to last and they're very cheap, so you could just buy another one. If you are too cheap to do that, you can do a web search and find out what you have to do try to clean the lens on your player. It probably won't help, but in a few cases it does. If the laser has gone bad and it's not a case of dirty lens, cleaning won't help.
