I have windows xp SP2, WMP9, and MPC installed. I know that a MPEG-1 decoder was installed with SP2 but I don't know what the file name was in Windows xp. I used gspot and it's telling me that there is no MPEG-1 video codec installed. MPC will play this type of video but when I use the seek bar and move it to a specific point in the video, it freezes.

Could someone either tell me what the name of the MPEG-1 decoder video filename is in windows xp or could someone tell me where I can download MPEG1 codecs? I've also been showing that older versions of WMV codecs are not installed either.

I would try reinstall wmp, if you don't want a newer version of wmp try google for windows media player 9 and see if you can find some old wmp9 version.

Gspot, while a great program, often gives anomalous answers when scanning any type of MPEG file, not just MPEG-1. If youhave XP SP2, you definitely have an MPEG-1 codec from Microsoft. MPEG-1 is not covered by any current patents, so it's free for anyone to implement. Your freezing problem is no doubt an MPC issue. You might try installing and using VLC to play the files.
If you also install some type of commercial DVD player software like WinDVD or PowerDVD, they can play MPEG-1 files with no problems.

Ok, so how would I diagnose and fix the problem with MPC?

    I've tried reinstalling WMP9 already. I've also reinstalled directx9.
Does anyone know what the filename is for the mpeg1 codec on windowsxp?

If gspot is flawed with mpegs then is there a program that will read it correctly?
