Call me crazy (grin) but I am putting together a DVD where the video program takes up 25% of the DVD space and the menu takes up 75%. I thought this was doable until I encountered this error message:

Am I attempting to do the impossible ... or is there an XML trick I can use to allow for concurrent 1GB menu VOBs???

Nope. Menus must be smaller than 1000 MB.

Is this a limitation of DVDauthor or of all DVD authoring tools?

Limitation of the DVD spec. My understanding is that a menu cannot cross VOB boundaries, so it must be small enough to within a single VOB (hence 1000 MB). I believe this is on a per title set basis, so theoretically, you could have a 1000 MB VMG menu, then a 1000 MB menu for VTS one, 1000 MB menu for VTS two, and some clever bridging to get you from menu to menu and eventually to the actual title in titleset three. Or make your menus slightly smaller so you can at least fit some short videos in the actual titlesets with the menu.
