I've been using Capty DVD to make mpg files into DVDs successfully for several months. But I have new problem with it resulting in discs that drop frames, often....every couple of seconds. It looks amazing like the bug that exists in TOAST when it makes DVDs from VOBs or mpgs instead of AVIs that make TOAST unusable as is for making DVDs from VOBs. Something abou the multiplexing??
I tried two ways of making mpgs from the ripped VIDEO_TS folder, Cinematize and MPEG Streamclip. Either way, same issue. Also the mpgs play just fine in VLC or in Quicktime. So, I think it has to be a CaptyDVD issue.
The only thing I did differently was add music to the menu, which plays fine. I haven't tried to remake it without a music menu in case that matters, but I will if someone thinks that's a wise next step. But before I do it, just was hoping someone might have seen this bug and know what's up.
thanks

Might this problem coincide with updating to QuickTime 7.3? I haven't used CaptyDVD recently so I don't know if QT 7.3 is causing a problem, but you mention that it worked okay until recently.
You know that you need to convert the VOBs to MPG to use in CaptyDVD (and in Toast, for that matter unless you have a complete VIDEO_TS folder). I presume you either choose to save as a VIDEO_TS or as a disc image file and burn your DVD later from that saved file. Does the problem appear when you play the saved VIDEO_TS or disc image from your hard drive in DVD player? If so, the file is indeed damaged during the multiplexing. If not then the problem is in burning or playing the DVD.
I don't think adding audio to the menu will cause a problem. However, I hope you set up your project so the audio will be Dolby Digital rather than PCM. High bit rate video (more than 6 mbps) along with PCM audio can cause stuttering playback on some players. If you do have the setting at PCM then CaptyDVD may be re-encoding the source audio as PCM which may be where your problem is. -
I have since made a different disc, no music, since the QT 7.3 update so I think that's ruled out.
I've been using mpgs in CaptyDVD. I just mentioned VOBs because the dropped/frame jerky playback think looked so much like the bug in TOAST when working from VOBs is all.
I think your theory about PCM may be right. I didn't set it that way intentionally, but it's the default so I could have ended up with that simply by forgetting to change to Dolby. I don't remember per se so the only way to rule it out is to redo it, with that setting for sure set on Dolby. I'll try it leaving the music in.
I have been authoring to a disc image and then burning from there. The problem does exist in the VIDEO_TS of the disc image. I'll be back with the resuts of my next try.
Thanks-kathy -
Setting it as Dolby, made no difference. Eliminating the music altogether made no difference. So....it seems that although the mpgs play fine in VLC and quicktime, there's just something about them that Capty can't cope with when multiplexing. Seem like the right conclusion?

This is curious. I've never experienced a problem using .mpg files in CaptyDVD. The only place for this problem to occur is in the multiplexing. Have you tried using Fix Timecode Breaks in Streamclip and then Convert to MPEG? That may repair the file. It also should make it work in Toast.
I've read posts about the jerky video in the Toast forum but haven't ever seen that on any project I've done. My MPEG files come from my standalone DVD recorder and sometimes from HDTV transfers from my DVR. -
I actually did make the mpg files 2 different ways....one was Cinematize (what I usually do) and one was MPEGStreamclip. I did run fix timecode breaks, but there weren't any.
I've add the TOAST bug numerous times....actually gave up using TOAST to do anything but burn really because the encoding from avis isn't that good and when authoring from VOBs or mpgs they all seem to get that "jerky" problem. It seems like they've been aware of this problem forever and haven't addressed it. I suspect knowing what it is would help explain the Capty weirdness I had with this one file.
I'll post again if I ever do sort it. Thankfully so far, it's just the one VIDEO_TS folder that did resulted in the problem mpgs.-kathy
