Say i have a movie of 100 minutes that i want to span 2 80 min disks i will be using 352x288 vbr CQ 100 224kbps audio what would the math be to work out the bitrate to get mpeg on cds with little or no space left over i have tried the bitrate calculators on this site and they only give me settings for CBR or divx how can i work it out with pen and paper any help would be appreciated

In one pass VBR mode (CQ) you can not calculate the final filesize exactly. You do not have control over the average bitrate. So even if you figure a Q level, that fill 2 CDs quite well, it will not work with the next movie. After several conversions you may figure out a rule of thumb.
If you need an exact calculation, you have to use CBR or VBR 2 (multi)-pass.

  4. I'm not too clear on what bit rates are and their role within a VCD ..

    Could someone please enlighten me?

  5. If you are referring to a VCD 2.0-compliant VCD, they are encoded at one fixed bitrate in order to be compliant.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

Vegita, get a bitrate calculator from the tool section. Calculate the constant resp. the average bitrate to fill the CD to its edge (XVCD/SVCD).
