I have a number of videos in MPEG format that are over YouTube's 100 MB limit, so I figured I would convert them to smaller FLV files and then upload the FLV files. For this purpose I bought the Xilisoft FLV converter. However, so far I have not been able to get YouTube to accept any of the FLV files I have created using this converter (I always get a message saying "Failed (Invalid file format)" after the video finishes processing). I am able to upload FLV files that I originally downloaded from YouTube, however. Below are the settings I've been using with the Xilisoft Converter:

    Video Size: 320x240
    Video Bit Rate: 200 - 300
    Frame Rate: 25

    Audio Codec: mp3
Audio Bit Rate: 40 or 48
    Channels: 1 (Mono)

    Zoom: Full (Keep aspect ratio)

I have tried playing with the bit rates, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know what the problem is?

I hope you didn't pay money for it. Not a brand I'd put a lot of faith in.

Have a read of these two posts :

Yep...Riva FLV Encoder works for my vids.
Make them 320x240 and you are ready to go.

Unfortunately I am still running Windows 98, and I can't get Riva FLV Encoder to work on my system. I know, I should upgrade. I'll have a look at the links that gunslinger provided and see if that doesn't help me. Thanks!

Ok, I downloaded Media Info so I could look at the FLV files that Xilisoft was creating, and when I opened them in Media Info, it could only display the file size! So maybe this is the problem. Anyway, since I can't get Riva FLV Encoder to work on my system, does anyone know of an FLV converter that will work with Windows 98 and can output FLV files that I can upload to YouTube? It doesn't necessarily have to be free, as long as it works.

Try uploading Divx/Xvid files at 320x240...that has also worked for me.

I just figured out a solution to my problem. I did a little research on the structure of the FLV format and, with the help of a hex editor, found that the Xilisoft FLV Encoder was writing two audio packets at the beginning of each file containing only codec information and no actual data. For some reason this was causing YouTube to reject the file. Incidentally, it also confused Median Info, so that it could only display the file size. I used the hex editor to remove the two audio packets and that appears to have done the trick. Median Info now displays the correct file information, and more importantly, YouTube accepts the modified file. Thanks to everyone who replied with info.

Looks like I may have spoken a bit too soon. While my solution did cause YouTube to accept the FLV files, I noticed that it also caused the audio and video to be slightly out of sync. Back to the drawing board.
