i have some Gateway computers that take DDR PC2100 memory. can i use DDR PC3200 memory in it? it will just run slower at the pc2100 speeds wont it?

Yes, should work fine. It will run at PC2100 speeds. Also make sure it's the correct voltage for your motherboard. And is it DDR or DDR2? They aren't interchangeable. (184 pin VS 240 pin for DDR2.)
You should be able to get that information from one of the memory companies websites, even if you don't buy it from them. -
You can plug in a higher-rated module and it should run at the lower speed. You can't do the reverse, obviously! PC3200 modules will run fine at PC2100 speeds.
