With tutorials and messages from here, I'm trying to learn the ins and outs of DVD file structures.
Do iDVD generated DVDs comply with the standards?
Like I'm not finding menus in the VOB files I'd suspect based on my readings and so forth.
Is it just more complex coding than I'd think, or does iDVD violate conventions to make functional, but technically wrong dvds?

As far as I know, iDVD's nav packs are compliant. You can keep it simple or put lots of interactive content in with it.

If a disc wasn't complaint it wouldn't play. Download this tool to take a look at any disc's structure:
