  1. For the last few days I have not been able to download (right click and save) a single file from the internet. I can't even initiate a download, as I always receive the "not able to open internet site" from my browser. This just started happening after several months of smooth, trouble-free operation. I am able, however, to download files from sites like Bearshare and Morpheus. Just can't seem to connect from my browser.

Is this a problem with my browser(IE) setting? If so, how can I correct?
    OR
Is it a problem with my ISP (Roadrunner, Cox Comm.)?

    Any help would be appreciated.

If you're using Internet Explorer go under Control Panel to Add/Remove Programs. You'll see internet explorer listed, right click it and you will get a couple of options. one should be to fix explorer. Choose that and see if it works for you.

  4. Tried the fix option and it didn't cure the problem. So, I used Realdownload to get the latest version of IE. After installing, the right-click save was tried again aaaand....same result. Guess I'll rely on a good download manager for the time being.

    Thanks anyways.

  5. Sounds like a virus to me... update your scanner and check your computer, especially if it sounds like it's focusing on a single program like internet explorer.

  6. You mentioned REALDOWNLOAD.
REAL is your problem. Real makes you freeze,Real makes you crah, Real doesn't allow the average user to uninstall it. it is too bad that so much cool content is Realplayer only. My suggestion is get rid of all things REAL and only leave the player available for when you really need to view realplayer data. IE doesn't need download helpers, all you need is a browser, winzip or stuffit, Media player and Quicktime for most anything you'd likely want to view. Lose crap like Real Arcadre,Jukebox,Download, etc.. Uninstall it all and try it for a wek. You'll see.

  7. I agree totally! Nearly screwed up work computer installing realplayer.
Its probably not his fault in that real-whatever is one of those anoying apps that seems to ignore the choices you make during installation and bloody installs the stuff anyway!
Uninstall everything except realplayer, use a reg cleaner like Easycleaner(don't use this with wndows Me though) and reinstall explorer as above.
    Good luck

  8. use getright - www.getright.com as a download manager.

if u dont want to do that - install IE 5 again (overwrite) from the original setup file.

  9. I agree with everyone that so far has spoken on this topic.

I would first uninstall all download managers. Reboot.

If your comfortable with the registry delete all keys that are associated with the download managers. Don't mess with it if you don't know what your doing.

If you still can, uninstall IE completely. Reboot.

Delete and remove any trace of ftp's in the network folder if you have one.

Use a program or manually clean out all cookies, temporary internet files, and history.

Manually go to the "temporary internet file" that is located under the "windows" folder and delete anything that you find.

    Empty the recycle bin.

    defrag Drive C. Reboot

Reinsall IE and go for 6 if you can. Reboot.

If it doesn't work, then your registry is messed up. Believe me I know. When you install these download managers they write instructions deep in the registry that is hard to trace. There is also other things "ills" that you can get from the net without knowing it other then viruses. I won't detail them here.

Depending on your OS you can try to restore the system or do a reinstall of the OS. IE uses some of the same .dll's and etc. as Windows does. If Explorer is crashing alot also, I would suggest you just format the drive and reinstall the OS.

  10. Scanned completely for viruses - none found
Finally reloaded the OS, and still coming up with the same results.

Funny thing, I can connect with my dial-up computer, just can't get those big files I'm used to getting with cable.

    :( :( :( :( :( :(

  11. You mentioned dial-up computer and something about cable. D you have cable? Are you having difficulties only with cable? It could be that you havent configured your nic card correctly, or it may not even be installed properly. To check later look in control panel - system -device manager tab.
To configure use winipcfg.exe (type this in popup after using start - run). Select nic card from dropdown list, clck release all, then renew all, thentry again.
I suggest you search more on winipcfg before you mess, google results in the microsoft help on this. Or contact your cable support people.
If this is insultingly simple to you, sorry - i'm not a computer expert - but i have used this myself to reconnect to internet after a reinstall.
    Good luck and keep posting
