  1. Hi,
I have a problem for nearly three months now, my XP do not generate thumbnail previews for MPG & AVI files. With MPG, i mean all files including MPEG-1 & MPEG-2.
I remember that when i installed the fresh copy of windows it display the previews for all video files but now it just creates previews for WMV files. Anyone knows a solution? This is quite annoying because if i burn these files as DATA DVD without "thumbs.db" file and put it in my laptop, it takes a longtime generating thumbnail previews.
    Thanks for any help.

EDIT : I posted this in wrong forum, i was supposed to post in Computer forum but i had these two forums opened and this goes here. Sorry Plz move it to the correct forum.

  6. Lol this will be like bumping a really old thread but i have the same problem again after 2.5 years and windows is again not generating previews of mpeg videos. The only difference is that Safesurfer method does'nt work anymore, maybe because i am using Windows 7 x64 this time.
Any help again would be appreciated.

  7. I have find that if i change the .MPG extension to .MPEG then Windows generate Thumbnail previews correctly but it does'nt generate for .MPG, this is quite strange, i did quite a few software install/uninstall yesterday and i am pretty sure some program messed up with the windows dll. I have searched google throughly today without any success.

MS has decided to move the associations file with W7. If you go there and check the association for .mpeg, them make .mpg the same, that may solve the problem.

    1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.
    2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
    3. Click the file type or protocol that you want the program to act as the default for.
    4. Click Change program.
    5. Click the program that you want to use as the default for the file type you selected, or click the arrow next to Other Programs to show additional programs. (If you don't see Other Programs, or your program is not listed, click Browse to find the program you want to use, and then click Open. If no other programs are installed that are able to open the file type or protocol, your choices will be limited.)
If you don't see the program you want to use as the default, click the arrow next to Other Programs to see a list of programs available on your computer
    6. Click OK.

  9. Thanks redwudz for the input, but unfortunately i have already done that and it did'nt help
The problem is not with the playback, the mpg plays fine in every player, WMP, RealPlayer, MPC etc, everything. Problem is that i don't see thumbnail previews of mpg files in windows explorer. Playback isn't the problem here

Just copy with notepad and save as .reg file and double click the file.

The author says that this hack will work for Vista and assumes it will work for Windows 7.

  11. The registry entry can't be added using .reg file but i tried adding it manually and the previews still not work.\
But i think i have found the problem, my almost complete registry in [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpg is gone and i am sure this is the cause, i think some program removed it. So if anyone can give me this registry then it might solve the problem.
So anyone using Windows 7 x64, please kindly export the registry in [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpg to *.reg file and post here.
Many thanks for all the trouble.

I was going to add that if the registry key was not there that you would have to add it manually.

    Open regedit.
Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, right click and choose add new key. Name it .mpg
Right click on .mpg and choose add new key. Name it ShellEx
    Right click on the ShellEx folder and choose add new key. Name it {BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
Click the {BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} folder and right click the Default DWord value and choose modify.
Paste in {c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590} into the data box and click OK.
Close regedit and now you should have mpg thumbnails.

You may have to restart your computer before the thumbnails show up in explorer.
