  1. I have a high quality AVI that is the big widescreen and want to convert it to a MPG in order to play on my panasonic DVD. However, I cant seem to do it correctly without squeezing the screen together or cutting off portions of the screen. Is there anyway to do the covert so the screen will look normal on my TV? The resolution of the AVI is 640/272 1559Kbit. I have been using TMPGen 2.51 for the conversion.

If you have any ideas on how to do this it would be greatly apprecaited. I am kinda a newbie with TMPGen so please fully explain your idea.

    Thanks,

  2. This you may want to try.

    Load the avi for encoding.

    mpeg 2
    Set the size to 720x480
    aspect to 16:9
    frames 29.97
    cq at 1500
    interlace
    dc at 10

    interlace
    topfield
    16:9 display

    output interval to 1
    max frames to 18

    mpeg standard
    select YUV
select soften intra blocks set to 25

Run it for a few minutes and stop it. Play back you encoded file which is in mpeg2 format to see if you like the results.

  3. I find the setting that works best for me is :

    aspect ratio "1-1"

    then advanced source range "1-1"
and video arrange "full screen-keep aspect ratio"

It keeps the same size of screen, and saves the hassle of worrying if you will have "long heads" etc..

with your source movie, it will look like a widescreen movie on your dvd player

I encode all my vids with this setting and we find it works out great for us..

People with small TVS may have problems with the size, but it keeps the quality great.

    Good luck!

  4. Depending on what kind of movie you want to make:

Pal SVCD : 480*576 > resize to 432*416 if you have a widescreen TV
    > resize to 432*320 if you have 4:3 TV

NTSC SVCD:480*480>resize to 432*352 if you have a widescreen TV
    >resize to 432*256 if you have 4:3 TV

PAl VCD: 352*288 >resize to 304*192 if you have a widescreen TV
    >rezise to 304*160 if you have 4:3 TV

NTSC VCD:352*240>resize to 304*160 if you have a widescreen TV
    >resize to 304*128 if you have 4:3 TV

    Resize calulation with FitCD

In center custom size: enter resize resolution.

Video tab use: Destination size....exs PAl SVCD 480*576

Advanced Tab: center custom size 432*414, this way you will add boarders to maintain aspect ratio.

And sett the dar flagg to 4:3 display. Since non dvd players can read this correct.

    Hope it helps

  6. frotsen,

I noticed you suggest resizing to 432 wide, within the standard 480 pixels, which of course adds black borders on left and right of picture. Was wondering if you found you needed to do this to prevent your DVD player & TV from cutting off sides of the picture? I am having this problem - I can encode a widescreen SVCD, but my DVD player/TV seems to chop off about 10% of the picture on all sides. The only way I could fix the problem was by shrinking the picture by 10%, using exactly the method you outline (setting Video Arrange Method to "Center (custom size)" at 432 wide by whatever).

I have Pioneer DV-333 - don't know if this problem is specific to Pioneer DVD players, or is more common. Have not seen any discussion of this issue on this forum.

    Thanks for your help,
