I just bought a Samsung combo VHS/DVD recorder. I put in some old home VHS videos and successfully burned them over to the DVD. I played the DVD back on the Samsung and it looked fine.

However, when I place the DVD in my computer it shows nothing. In fact, the computer thinks it is blank. There are no files shown when using explorer.

I did some searching, but did not find anything. Others that had similar problems at least had access to file for conversion.

The Samsung itself gave me no options of DVD formats to create, just COPY

Would anyone be able to help me out?

    Thanks. Jim

Exactly as the last post said. The files play fine on your machine because it's in a format that it recognizes internally, but finalizing it will make it standard among all DvD players.

If by some chance you have finalized it and it still doesn't work that may be due to the machine having limited compatibility. This happens with some of these stand-alones. My DvR in fact has a firmware issue and the finalizing is all screwed up - it doesn't work anymore. I'm actually cool with it because I create my final encodes/productions/edits/etc on my PC anyway.

If the latter applies to you (finalizing doesn't work) then you can use an app like NeroVision, which sucks the files right out and converts losslessly into .mpg - which you can work with and make a "real" disc.

I don't know how Nero does it with importing un-finalized discs, but it does it very effectively.
I hate VHS. I always did.

Thanks very much for your help. That was the problem.

Unfortunately after finishing a copy the Samsung does not ask if you want it finalized, so I had to go in the menu and do it manually.

On my first copy I almost filled the DVD and it did ask that question, but the default was No and I just pressed Enter.

    I appreciate your time
