    Hello,

I have read that MP4 Files can use codecs such as H.264 etc.
I have a phone that uses an "Mpeg-4 Profile" for recording and records in .mp4 format.
I want to know what codec is used in the recording, e.g h.264, and also want to find out more information about my video file, GSpot did not show much information at all, most of the fields were blank, it only shows :

    Container :

    File Type : 3GPP Media (.3GP)
    Mime Type : video/3gpp

How can it be a .3gp file when its an .mp4 file?

Can somebody please explain everything, I have looked at wikipedia to get a better understanding but I still cannot understand what is happening in my situation.

    Thanks.

  2. MPEG-4 is a video compression standard. MP4 and 3GP are containers that can contain MPEG-4 video.

If you just want to watch your 3GP videos try using VLC.

Try MediaInfo and see what it says about the video and audio codecs.

    Thanks for the link.

It says the container is 3gp4, but the file ends in .mp4, dont know why.

    Then it says :

    Video Streams : MPEG-4 Visual

It's possible, but not likely, that it could support h.264. Most phones aren't powerful enough for playback in realtime with the h.264 codec. Most of those phones that support "MP4/3GP" support either the simple profile ("MP4v1") or the advanced simple profile ("MP4v2"), whereas h.264 is "MP4v10". The 3gp/3gp2 specifications are basically a set of application-specific subsets of the MP4 (v1 or v2) specs (this includes audio, video, and systems/container specs).
It's also possible that the video codec it's using is h.263 (as that was formalized specifically for these kinds of communications purposes).

    I have a Pocket PC , O2 XDA 2, Quite a powerful Phone though

There is also another Profile called H.263, video's use the .3gp extension and this is used for lower resolution video's. Ussually the profile "MMS VIDEO" uses H.263, for smaller files meant to be sent via MMS.

I think the MPEG-4 Option on my phone might use MP4v1 or v2 like you said.

What I want to know is which "part" my recording is, example there is mpeg-4 part2, part 10 etc.
