You say that like its nothing. Its not like you can just take out your regular hard drive and hook it up to a 360. The 360 20 gig drive retails for $90. Plus, you get the HD cables (which come in handy if you want to use it on an HDTV). It also seems that the Arcade version is not compatible with XBOX games.
now were getting somewhere. i think i saw the 120 gig HD at walmart for 100 and hte cables for 20 so that would bring the cost up for th earcade version from 280 to 400 but if it wont play xbox games that would be a slight drawback. but we do still have the xbox if worse come to worse. so will the original XBOX 360s that you can get for around 150 or less play the old xbox games? if so it seems that is the better way. that would make it 150 for 360 100 for HD and 20ish for the cables .. basicly i have the elite for 270 bux. or am i missing something else here?

Check out www.xbox.com for compatibility on the 360. There are quite a few but not everything will work. They do it through emulation since they switched graphic processors from the original to the 360.

If I remember right the original xbox had a 8gb internal harddrive. The 360 systems that are the cheapest are 20gb harddrives. There used to be 'core' systems with no harddrives. Don't know if you can still buy them that way. You snap them on the side of the xbox. So you can get 120gb if you want. 20 is more than enough if you only plan to do games with it.

Basically I would say the main reason to get an elite 360 would be for hdmi output. Other than that there really isn't any difference from what I can tell. And fyi component 1080i looks great on my 32" hdtv 720p westinghouse (1366x768 res lcd).

Ahhhhh that makes more sence. so all im getting with the pro is the HD then? my brother has the older 360 with no hd and he saves games. so what am i missing if i get the arcade that my daughter will need.? is says it comes with a memroy card. keep in mind she will most likely only play guitgar hero 3 and tomb raider, amybe a fighting game like dead or alive or what ever the 360 has

    good discussion. No, GREAT discussion.

I too am in the market to choose between the Xbox 360 and PS3 as my kids have outgrown their GameCube and want to step up to the next level. I am not a gamer AT ALL and am totally lost when it comes to choosing one vs the other. My kids will be gaming on a 50-inch Plasma with dual HDMI, so HDMI output would be nice, if not Comp would work also.

What I would like to know is which direction to go in. I am not going to the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray route as I am not too keen on being stuck with a dinosaur in a few years. They will only game and maybe watch some DVDs, which I assume either one can do without the add-on with the 360 and the PS3 I believe comes with a player. Correct? What size hard drive is sufficient for a 7 and 10 year old to save games if they need to? What other features do you think would be a good value-added or makes one better than the other?

    Thanks.

Yes the xbox 360 can do normal dvds without an add on. Same with the ps3. Note the PS3 has builtin BLURAY support so you can do bluray right away if you go ps3.

The smallest harddrive size for the 360 is 20gb as far as I know. I can't imagine ever filling it up for just games. If you want to put a lot of music, movies and pictures on it than you will want a larger harddrive - but if you have a pc with wifi than you can stream most of it anyway (wma and wmv only though with jpg also).

Conquest10 is on to something - you might want to consider a WII instead. First of all much cheaper and much more kid friendly. THOUGH good luck finding one. Apparently they have been scarce all year. I am glad I bought mine last year when they first came out.

And to heywould 3 - yes I got the HD-DVD add on off ebay for 110.00. I got the core used at gamestop and paid for the wifi adapter and 20gb harddrive.

Thanks guys. Right on the money. I discussed this issue with them and it was unanimous in favor of the Wii. Cool, there wil be no meltdowns on Santa Day I love it when it is so easy

    Thanks for the tremendous suggestion.

    Good going dvwannab

    Hope you find one.

Two suggestions right away - EXCITE TRUCK and SUPER MARIO GALAXY. Excite Truck is a great quick pick up game that you can get into without any serious commitment. Super Mario Galaxy is a great game that will tie up your time as you try to collect as many stars as you can. ZELDA TWILIGHT PRINCESS is good I just haven't commited much time to it. Though I do have the cheat book so I guess its just a matter of sitting down and doing it

Does anybody know if you can use a ps2-to-usb adapter to use ps2 controllers on the xbox 360?

The 360 has usb ports. What I'd like to do is use my wired ps2 guitar hero controller on the 360. I am not entirely happy with the new rockband guitar. However I don't really want to buy a new guitar. I'd like to just buy a relatively cheap adapter and use my existing ps2 guitar on the 360.

Is this possible? I know they make the ps2-usb adapters for use on the pc. Can they work on the 360?

Why don't you just get the GHIII wireless controller? Way better feel than the PS2 guitars.

With the adapter you run the risk of it not working at all. Then if it does, the 360 might not have the proper drivers to recognize the device.

Oh, and Super Mario Galaxy is awesome.

glad you like mario galaxy conquest I do too. Though I'm playing rockband and halo3 more at the moment.

I think in the end I will get a gh3 wireless for the 360. That will probably suit me better.

Also I've played the rockband guitar some more this afternoon and its not really that bad. Though I think one thing that bothers me is the thinness of the neck. If I play the lower buttons closer to the body of the guitar it feels a little better.

How much are guitar only models for the 360? I don't need any games. Though I may end up buying 2 or 3 later.

Don't know how much for just the guitar. I do recommend the GHIII contoller though. Much more sturdy and less cheap and plasticy feeling than the GHII ones. It also has a thicker neck.

You know I think I found out what was wrong - I had the guitar strap too loose! It finally dawned on me playing it last night. I snugged it up a little and walla - it plays better! I think what was going on was that I was hanging it low and the position wasn't correct.

It is a lot better now.

I still may look into a new wireless gh controller for rockband however. But right now its not feeling as out of place as it was before.

One side note - I don't think I've found a firm answer to this. Does the rockband guitar work on guitar hero for the 360?

I don't see why not. If the buttons are mapped to the same ones it should work (and they most likely do seeing as GHIII guitars work with Rockband).

Well apparently there aren't any 360 wireless guitars out yet. They come out in january or something.

Guess I'll have to wait. THough I'll try renting gh2 or 3 at blockbuster sometime to see if the rockband guitar works on it.
