  1. I've been trying yo convert with TMPEG a WMV file to MPG on every file at the same time it freezes its starts by saying it will take 30minutes than at different points in the encoding it locks up and the time gets greater and greater it will go from 30 minutes to 6 hours? I let one of the files run all night and it did convert it to mpeg1 but about 30% into the clip it cut out the audio so I tried to convert the audio to wav first but no luck it still keeps on locking up I have no idea what to do to get it to convert properly? TMPEG keeps stoping every time and starting up again its a smooth encoding proccess widows will say its not responding than 5 minutes later the time will inch a head and it will work and convert 2 seconds of film then lock up again?

    Please Help
    Thanx

Subject: WMV conversion pt1 - Intro and conversion to MPG

    INTRODUCTION – THE PROBLEM
    --------------------------

I’ve seen the question asked “How do you convert WMV to MPG or AVI?” many times on various forums. There are 2 commonly given answers to this, both of which are wrong:-

    1) AsfTools

Repairs & joins WMV’s. Converts ASF to AVI if the ASF uses a codec that works in AVI format. Some ASF’s and ALL WMV’s use a WMV codec, which doesn’t work with AVI (cos Microshaft like it that way – no other reason as far as I know). So the output AVI is useless.

    2) TMPGEnc

If you select “Video only”, converts the video fine. BUT won’t convert the Audio – it gets so far (not very far usually) then “sticks”. This happens whether you select “Audio only” or “Video+Audio”.

    SO....
    ------

As no-one else has come up with a solution (apart from Graphedit, which takes 400 years to learn and often doesn’t do the job anyway), it looks like it’s impossible. Microshaft finally got one over on us….

NOT A CHANCE!!!! This method REALLY works, using only programs that are easy to use and very common. So, here it is, nadir’s definitive guide to WMV conversion:-

    WMV TO MPG
    ----------

    1) Convert the Audio

The Audio in a WMV is in WMA format – the same as WMA Audio files in other words. There are several programs around that can convert WMA audio to other formats and there may be others that can do this part of the process. But the one that I KNOW will do it is the one I’d recommend to anyone just for “normal” Audio conversion (e.g. MP3 to WAV), normalisation etc.

The program is dBpowerAMP, which is freeware and contains no spyware. You can get it from download.com but I suggest you visit the developer’s site, www.dbpoweramp.com to read up on it (you may find other uses for it!). You’ll need to visit the “codec central” page on this site anyway as you’ll need to install the WMA converter, which is one of the many “optional extras” on offer.

So, now you’ve got dBpowerAMP installed, the rest is easy:-

    a) Right click on the WMV file and you’ll see an option called “Convert To”. Click this.

    b) From the options that appear, select “Wave” (I’ll explain later why this is the best choice).

    c) Choose your settings – up to you but I go for a high quality as we’re creating an interim file that will be deleted later (this is one case where size really doesn’t matter!). I also don’t bother with normalisation for this as it’s unnecessary. Whatever you do, DO NOT select “Delete Source File(s) After Conversion”!!!!

    d) Click “Convert”.

The result of this is a WAV file containing the Audio from your WMV converted to standard WAV format. You can listen to it in WinAmp (or similar) if you want.

Incidentally, this should also work for ASF files that have WMA sound, though I haven’t tried it myself.

    2) Produce the MPG

Open TMPGEnc. Using the Browse buttons, select the WMV as the Video Input and the WAV created above as the Audio Input.

    And create the MPG!!!!

PLEASE NOTE ONE THING – this will not work if the WMV has its “Is_Protected” setting turned on. This is used to protect copyright stuff and I’ve NEVER seen a porn movie that has this setting.

Coming in Part 2 – problems, solutions, observations, general advice. I’ve tested this out pretty well so I might as well share what I’ve learned.
