I have two sony vx DV camcorders. When I capture video into my computer using DV 1394 the play back sounds as if the audio is dropping out. I used another computer and the same thing happened. When I play the footage straight to a TV using AV cables it sounds great. I did a test using both my camcorders for capture. I had one play that and ran AV cables to the other the had it run DV to the computer. I captured and the audio sounds great but I lost the clarity of the DV video. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

What program are you using to capture and what format?

You should be capturing as DV-AVI, this is an exact copy of what is on the tape.

I used Stuido 10 plus and Adobe 6.5. I captured in DV avi and Mpeg. The same results of dropping audio. If it was my camera or my tapes would it still be there during regular av play back?

What I would suggest is first using winDV to make a short capture, the only option is to capture as DV-AVI so it's impossible to make a mistake. If the problem still exists drop it into Movie Maker and create a WMV using the lowest preset they have. This will help determine if it's actually the capture or simply a playback problem. Considering you experinece this on two seperate machines I'm guessing this isn't going to help but it's worth a shot.

If it still exists in the WMV file get a new firewire cable.. still exists? Try it on a different computer with your new firewire cable.

If all that fails then it most likely is the cam or the tapes, if you could borrow another cam try that.

    ------------

Problems like these are tough to diagnose because it can be a variety of things.

You say you are using the using DV 1394 to capture. Do you mean you are using analog cables?

DV should be digitally captured over IEEE-1394. This gets you an exact digital copy to the hard drive and avoids analog conversion. WinDV as said is a staight forward DV capture tool to get your file on the hard drive. The DV-AVI file can then be imported into any edit program.

When I use IEEE 1394 firewire I have the drop audio. It drops in just play back too with-out capture. I also notice that it is in the same place as if it was recorded that way. If I use analog cables their are no drops. So what I did was hooked up both cameras together with analog cables then output with IEEE 1394 cable to the computer. This took care of the problem. I have no audio drops. After running all the above test I have figured out that the problem is in one of my cameras. I have not yet figured out what the problem is. Is it the camera mic, the heads, or some other problem.
