Yes, it's similar to the method I have imagined. Somewhat time consuming and difficult to automate however.

Hehe, I can't argue with you there. I tried to get DVDSubEdit to just take the resized subpics, but couldn't quite figure out how to do it. It won't let you stick 720x480 BMPs into a PAL 720x576 menu. And I can't make an NTSC menu using 720x576 subpics to be replaced in DVDSubEdit later on. Perhaps some sort of a patch job just for fooling it into thinking it's really an NTSC menu might work. I've been thinking of trying that. Of course, afterwards I'd really make it a true NTSC menu by also resizing the motion or still background menus as well as shifting the buttons.
This is the single hardest and most time consuming part of the whole process. The rest of it is work, but fairly easy and straightforward work. -
Yes, the problem with DVDSubEdit is that you will have to save all 720x576 images from the original PAL DVD, batch resize them, and re-import the 720x480 images in the final DVD, again with DVDSubEdit. It's certainly not the best solution. But it should be possible to rebuild the STR files produced during phase 1 (or 2, I don't remember) of DVDRB, and replace them in its temp folder before launching phase 3. That should be possible with Subtitle Creator. The advantage is that we will not need to remux manually.

I'd just like to start this post by saying that this is a thread of great interest for myself and, I'm sure, a lot of people out there, and that I find it incredible that the user known as "Noahtuck" has been allowed to repeatedly disrupt it with a level of rudeness and ignorance that I have rarely ever seen in any site of the Internet, much less a proper and serious discussion site, without an administrator deleting his mentally challenged posts. But perhaps it's not too late to do just that, so that visitors happening upon this thread in the future will find the relevant interesting and informative parts, without having to put up with the above mentioned idiocy in the way, as I unfortunately had to - just a suggestion.
Skipping that and concentrating on the posts and users here that do matter, I'd just like to add to the discussion that as far as individual titles go, nowadays I simply re-encode them with TMPGEnc Xpress with the specs of the format I wish to convert to (NTSC or PAL), in turn processing the resulting file through TMPGEnc Authoring Works to achieve the final VOBs in the desired format.
It may be worth to note that it's important to review whatever video settings you have on Xpress before re-encoding, else you might end up with video anomalies - for instance, make sure to use a proper de-interlacing method based on your source video (the program is quite competent on this regard, both in terms of alternative algorithms and the final results) - in case of doubt, inverse pulldown should do the job in most cases.
I have converted a number of titles using this method for custom projects, and so far I'm satisfied with the results.
Perhaps this is still not the ideal one-click solution to convert a full DVD between NTSC/PAL that we all wish we had, but it's certainly (far) less time consuming than some others - I hope it helps.
