Please bare with me, I've done some preliminary research, but the guides and FAQ's on this website are far too involving for me to search through entirely to get the little bit of knowledge I need. I'm also an entry-level AV user.

I'd like to back up my DVD library to my external HD for viewing on my PC or taking digital copies with me on business trips or family vacations.

    I've tried two methods:

1: Ripping the video files using Xilisoft DVD Ripper to create an AVI file.
+'s: conserves space, can be burned to data disk for viewing on my dvd player.
-'s: doesn't include special features, only rips in 2-channel stereo.

2: Ripping the disk image to my HD to mount with virtual drive software.
+'s: preserves special features, preserves audio quality.
    -'s: takes up more space.

I'd like to find a way to rip the main movies from my DVD's to divx or another format so that I can burn more than one of them to a data disk for viewing on my Divx player, but I want to preserve the 5.1 audio. Is this possible?

Yes. Use AutoGK. You can tell it to keep the 5.1 AC3 audio track and convert just the video to Divx/Xvid.

There are other options, including FairUseWizard and AVI.net that are also worth a look, but this is the one I use.

Thanks again guns1inger. Everything worked like a charm. I've been reading your responses to other threads for some other troubleshooting of mine and your advice is always solid. You are a stud.
