    hi, my friend has a bad problem, ok, their internet suddenly stopped working, just like that in a second, we checked if the modem and wireless router were still connected (btw the modem connects to the wireless router which connects to the PC which worked for months until now), the laptop which is wirelessly connected IS connected to the main PC as the connection is shown as working but also says limited or no connection, I've tried disabling firewall, didn't work, we called up their ISP which was ntl but was taken over by Virgin, they took us through the disconnect reconnect process which made us unplug the wireless router, the internet worked for several seconds, just the modem being connected to the PC, but then that stopped. There's only one connection called 'Local Area Connection', I tried re-installing the ISP's CD with the drivers (note: the original drivers given with the computer weren't installed) but no luck as nothing happens, I'm all out of ideas, can anyone help please?

    connect the main pc directly to the modem. right click on my network places click on properties right click on local area connection select repair. if you can't get on at all after that then the modem is probably dying/dead.

  3. Are you saying you had the ISP on the phone, modem directly connected to the PC, it worked for a few seconds and died, Then -
    WHAT DID THE ISP TECH ON THE PHONE WHEN THIS EVENT OCURRED SAY ABOUT THIS ???????

    Cmd Prompt, ISPCONFIG /ALL, ping yourself, gateway, and DNS, report results.

    If you can't ping the modem, test the router. If you can't ping anything, its your card or TCP/IP, if you can ping the router and not the modem, its the modem. Manually input your address, do NOT repeat NOT rely on DHCP to provide addresses, that's the "obtain automatically" switch.

    DHCP failure is not grounds to replace the modem if it can connect. Failure to ping, with a cable and card able to ping another device, is sufficient evidence to get the modem replaced. Although pretty much they will replace the modem to anyone who complains, there is no charge, and it certainly wouldn't hurt. Frankly I like the older Sprint DSL units better than the newer ones, however.

    Replace the cable with one that is KNOWN to be good, or failing that, ANY cable whatsoever, other than the one you are currently using.

  5. well, first you need two paddles and a small ball....


    Command prompt. "C:\>" Could be a directory name after the slash, does not matter.

    You type "ping 192.168.0.1", putting in the numbers you got from typing "ipconfig /all", in place of the "192.168.0.1" Do not type the quotations.

    Yourself, gateway, DNS, 63.75.167.11. Report results for all four.

    Repeat Urgent Question - WTF did the ISP tech say while you had them on the phone at the time of failure?

    My guess would be DHCP failure. One reason I don't use DHCP whenever possible.

    More detail needed on laptop, you describe it is connected to the PC, what exactly leads you to believe this is so? Can the laptop get on the internet? Are there files shared which can be accessed, or were they in the past? Or are you saying the laptop shows up in Network Places (this could be a remembered connection), then you click on it and nothing happens?
