When I press record in the software I use I get the following message "video stream contains copying protection information. recording cannot be continued"

The software is WinDVD creator 2
The capture device is DLINK DUB-AV300
The Hi 8 camcorder is a Sony CCD-TRV49E

I have tried both the supplied (with camcorder) A/V lead and SVHS (S-Video) to see if that fixes it bit it doesn't. I have even gone into the camcorders menu and changed the video out settings to TV.

I also have Nero but that does not recorgnise the capture device.

I have spoken to DLINK and am waiting for their response. I have also spoken to representatives of WinDVD and they suggested it has something to do with macrovision and was surposed to have received some update but am still waiting. How macrovision affects my 8mm camcorder tapes I don't see as they are mine and I recorded them on my own camcorder.

What I would like to know is if there is a simple fix

Simple fix is unlikely, the usual fix is a "video clarifier" which are fairly cheap but have the potential to degrade the quality of you video or a TBC which is fairly expensive but can improve your video.

More info here on the "why" : www.nepadigital.com/mv/

It says VHS but it applies to hi-8 too.

First of all thanks for the reply and the article (it was helpful). I checked my camcorder settings and there was a setting called TBC which I turned off and started to record. Everything went well at the start as I went past the earlier time I got the error message and thought I fixed it. However, I got the error message again but this time much later in the recording.

I have fixed the problem and can now record to hard drive without the error message popping up. The error was caused by either
    a. the sidescreen was open when I was transferring the footage (I doubt that would have been the problem)
    b. on the camcorder I turned off TBC in the edit features and that was upsetting the transferring
    c. I opened up the video grabber (DUB-AV300) and pressed a white rectangle button (well it made a clicking sound like a button) and that turned something off or on - I am not sure which

Anyway it all works and I'm happy with that. So now on with the transferring and editing.
