What format do files have to be in to burn them to a dvd so the dvd then plays on a home dvd player?

Look to the upper left on this page for 'WHAT IS' DVD and you will see the DVD format, structure and specification.

All DVD players will play Mpeg2 video, if in Canada it has to be NTSC type unless you bought special player which will play PAL also.
Some newer players will play DivX (Mpeg4) format and other.
Look at your DVD player manual it will tell you what format it can play. -
If you are authoring your own DVD, then you will want the video to be m2v. The audio should be ac3 or wav. But that is way oversimplifying it. You should read the 'What is DVD' for more info.
