  1. i have a large video file (avi) and i want to cut off the first 10 seconds from the beginning. is there any software that i can get that will do this without any loss in quality?

    It depends what you mean by 'AVI'. That's just a container name. There are dozens of formats included from DV to Xvid. But I would try VirtualDub. It has lots of guides available and works for most any AVI type format. And it's freeware.

    Virtualdub in smart render mode.

    The new experimental version ( 1.7.X ) can do some pretty interesting stuff including frame accurate editing in smart render mode.

    It can now handle VBR audio (even though the error message is still there) which seemed to be a major issue with a few posters. With the addition of a few file type plugins, it can now open WMV, MPEG-2, QT and FLV. Hopefully, a H264 plugin is soon to follow.

    Some filters can be used in Blend mode with the Curve Editor to make transitions.
