I saved about 1 3rd of an avi after it was edited with virtual dub. whne I play it though it was very choppy. why is this happening?

I suspect you used the default Video -> Full Processing mode without selecting a compression codec. That would give you a very large uncomrpessed RGB file which can't be read off the hard drive fast enough to play smoothly.
If you're just cutting out parts try using Video -> Direct Stream Copy mode.
