    Hi,

I use VirtualDub to convert Mjpeg movies (.avi) out of my digicam Canon S80, to Divx in order to watch them in my standalone Divx player.

I'd like to know if I can convert them (Mjpeg or Divx files) to Mpeg-4 AVC (Part 10) using x264 and still with VirtualDub since I'm very familiar with it now.

Until now I though Vdub could produce only .avi files and not .mp4 files. But maybe it has changed since?

If Vdub can't do it, what frontend/GUI do you suggest for Mpeg-4 conversion?

Something i don't understand is that people classify GUIs based on the degree of fine tuning and the number of codec's controllable parameters, it provides. However all the GUIs I usually know (including Vdub) give the user the control over all the codecs parameters (e.g. usually when you configure the video to Divx, the original codec menu is opened).

    Thanks

You can put h264 in avi. You can use the x264 vfw from http://gabextreme.googlepages.com/x264vfwunited together with Virtualdub. But I guess that mp4 is better for h264 and you can then use megui or avidemux.

And your standalone dvd player will probably not support h264 video.

    nalooti,

Definitely go http://mainconcept.com. They write the best codecs in the world.
What are you using for your MJPG codec ?? I have tried to get the MJPG codec that is in the latest version of Canon's ZoomBrowser, but I can't get Vdub to see it.
Also, Main Concept has a fantastic MJPG codec that will be read in Virtualdub.
They also have the best H.264 (Part 10) codec in existence.
You can download a demo of their H.264 codec and it will show up in virtualdub.
Main Concept's H.264 encoding is faster than any available, with the best quality, BUT ....H.264 encoding is a lot slower than encoding to Divx or MPEG.

I just read some fantastic news yesterday.
Main Concept, who mostly writes codecs for large businesses and applications like Adobe and Corel, will become part of Divx !!
What a great move by Divx. The 6.7 encoder of Divx is fantastic and now they will have the best H.264 codec in the business, and the best MPEG encoder as well.

I have had their MPEG encoder for years. It is so fast with the best quality.
Some of the Main Concept techs have been involved with writing a lot of the best and most valuable open source freeware (or donationware) that is used.

Baldrick is correct. H.264, which looks like it is going to be the winner in the for streaming Web Video, is not available for stand alone DVDs and like I said, encoding is slow, But the quality per byte for web videos is the best.

With the latest Divx encoders, its great that you can get a Philips 642 (the top selling DVD player of all time), for about $40 - $50. I have three Divx enabled DVD players in my home. One is a writer as well. Two Philips and a Lite-On.

Besides Canon's Zoom Browser, you probably know that Bitter Apple/Microtrash's Quick Time plays MJPG well, but not as well as Canon's Zoom Browser.
