I'm trying to make my own HR.HDTV xvid's for playback on my Xbox by converting them from 720p.x264.mkv videos and I thought I'd found the answer in WinAVI but it keeps converting the 6 channel AC3 sound in to 2 channels even though I have 'Enable Direct AC3' enabled.

    The source files are -

    MPEG-4 AVC 1280*720/AC3 48Khz 6 channel

The converted resolution is perfect at 960*540 for the Xbox but it's only stereo.

Any suggestions or other conversion methods?

You can demux the ac3 from the mkv with mkvextractgui and add it to the avi with virtualdubmod, streams->stream list or avimuxgui. Or convert the mkv to avi with ac3 using AllToAvi. If the xbox supports ac3 then.

If you have a xbox 360 you could try use gotsent and change to a mp4 file.

OK, I tried again but this time using the 'Audio stream copy' option but even though it's 6 channel it jumps/stutters.
