Why can't people just be civil to one another?

IMO, many people have low moral values. Furthermore, you can't tell an ordinary joke or glance at a girl without someone going ballistic. Meanwhile, businesses frequently treat their employees as if they were disposable diapers (or worse). I'd rant about government too, but this isn't the proper place.

I'm convinced that poor parenting skills are largely to blame. Ugh!

Sometimes people have too high of so-called "moral" values. Again, going ballistic at anything "sinful" or "immoral" to their narrow vision of society. The uppity self-righteous attitudes.

Parenting, or rather lack thereof, is to blame. Sometimes too much parenting, brainwashing and coddling, are just as bad.

Furthermore, some people just seem to enjoy spreading pain wherever they are.

And some people go out of their way to feel insulted so they can "lash back".

Maybe my de-evolution theory is truer than I suspected. Maybe the human race really is turning back into monkeys.

A slippage in manners is obvious to many Americans. Nearly 70 percent questioned in an Associated Press-Ipsos poll said people are ruder than they were 20 or 30 years ago. The trend is noticed in large and small places alike, although more urban people report bad manners, 74 percent, then do people in rural areas, 67 percent.

The real question is this, "Can this problem be solved or is society going to allow this to become the norm?"

    Does anyone care?

    seriously?
How about a complete lack thereof.
I'm in my 30's now and the vast majority of people I know in my age group were raised almost completely by television.
I doubt things have gotten any better since those days.
I believe the internet is now raising American children.

My sister (an ex-teacher) says that adults are simply too busy to take care of their kids, much less teach them anything. The parents expect the school system to be completely responsible for raising and disciplining their kids.

Additionally, our society has a lot of small minded people who simply like to complain; thereby making life miserable for everyone else.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions to improve this situation?

About a decade ago, Newsweek magazine published an article titled, "The New American Crybaby." It was a sociological rant on how the US had changed from a largely tolerant society to one dominated by whiners and complainers. Note that by "largely tolerant," I mean the way people treat each other in day to day life matters as opposed to matters of race, sex, etc. The article's author felt that a lot of this new attitude was a byproduct of our victory in WWII ... that our victory engendered a "superior" attitude among US citizens ... with a vocal minority of them asserting that superiority at the expense of those less vocal. Even though the overwhelming majority of persons remained tolerant, society began to cater to the vocal minority of whiners and complainers. The unwillingness of the silent and tolerant majority to significantly challenge the vocal minority gave that minority, over time, a moral authority over everyone else. And that, in turn, produced subsequent generations who more or less felt obliged to whine and complain as if it was expected of them.

If the article is making correct assumptions, and I tend to think that it does, the only way to improve the situation is to challenge whiners and complainers at every turn ... until whining and complaining is considered a personal liability and not a societal asset.

    Just a thought...

    Regards,
    J. Alec West

How do we challenge them without seeming like whiners or a complainers ourselves?

I think most people would gravitate toward the original complaint to assess blame. The one problem is that whiners and complainers have achieved a certain "moral authority." So when you challenge them, your arguments must be both logical and convincing (and possibly even embarrassing to the original complainer).

And what if they refuse to be reasonable?

Let's do everything we can to bring back the concept of "personal responsibility".
You know, taking responsibility for your own actions (or in many cases, inactions).
No more suing McDonalds because you're a fat lazy pig. No more blaming video games for you obnoxious brat's horrid behaviour.
Stuff like that. Let's just suck it up, man up, whatever you wanna call it -- and own up to the fact that when you **** up, it's nobody's fault but your own.

I like that. There are too many people that pass the buck in todays society. I know I make mistakes, and when I screw up, I admit it.
