Did you try it this way? Portugal is regio 2, I think.
Region 2 (Europe, Middle East, Japan) - 38767
1. Turn the player on, make sure there's no disc in the tray
2. Press SUBTITLE button on the remote
3. Enter 38767 on the remote, Region code will appear on the screen
4. Press 9 for multizone (multizone = region free)
5. Press SUBTITLE button on the remote
6. Turn the player off (then turn it on)
7. Enjoy your multizone player

Chris when I press SUBTITLE button on the remote and enter 38767 on the remote, Region code dont appear on the screen

I have a Samsung P355 and there's a slightly different description of that. I tried it and it worked.
https://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/samsung-dvd-p355/5636
The region code (2) appeared in the top left corner of the screen. Just where the numbers you have to type also appear. Then after I typed 9, the 2 changed into 9. Then I had to open the tray and shut-off the player.
Try some different buttons. I had to press the "Repeat" button instead of "Subtitle". There are also some different numbers for region 2 at the link above.

when I press Subtitle The region code (2) appeared in the top left corner of the screen, and I put The 9 free code he never change
-
This means your at the right track. That the subtitle key is the right one.
Do you mean the 2 changes not into a 9 when you press it or that the actual region wasn't changed after you finished the procedure. If it's changed to 9 you have to open the tray and then shut-off the player to activate it (that worked for me).
If the 2 already doesn't change into a 9, then possibly they have locked the changing of regions.

I have the same problem, my Region 2 Samsung P171 won´t let me play a Region 1 DVD even when I have changed the zone succesfully. I´ve followed ALL the steps above with the right code, the "2" appears on screen, I changed it into a "9" for multizone or even for a "1" for Region 1, press subtitle again and turn off power. Then I insert my DVD (region 1) and it says it won´t play the disc because of the regional coding.
Any ideas?
Thanks... -
The last possibility I can think of is to NOT press the subtitle button the second time
but instead open the tray "on the remote" and then shut-off the player.
It seems that Samsung uses different procedures for the same type of players.
Opening the tray seems to be one of them. This is described at the P355 link above.
You have to do it ALL on the remote not on the player itself.

Hi, another problem: when i press 'subtitle' button on remote, with DVD tray empty, the screen displays a 'no entry' sign - i.e. it won't permit entry of any data, including the codes mentioned on this thread. Any ideas how we manage this?
Ridiculous situation! we bought this advertised as a multizone player, but stuck in region 2, with a house full of legitimate DVDs from other regions! -
Hi to all
I read all this and I was wondering how to know what firmware do I have.
After I can check this, is there any HOW TO upgrade firmware. I mean, I don't see any instructions about how to upgrade, how to connect PC and insert this firmware into P171 player.
I purchased this in Europe and I found this firmwares here http://www.samsung.com/download/Model_Select.aspx?type=DVD+Player&typecode=3&subtype=S...e=FM&language=
So is that one saying EUR for me ?
Thanks -
The third link "* update manual" on the page you listed contains the instructions for updating the firmware.

Hi there
The difference is that you have to put the file with the name NP7CAS.rom because if not the player will not recognize the upgrade..
For those who can't update the firmware here's a little tip that worked for me:
I have bought a new P171 yesterday and i was having the same problems that some users mentioned and that's why:
I have done everything as described by "Region code hack posted by pat" but when i was in step 3 i was always putting the region code 2 (Portugal) but in the screen only appeared "no disc" then i realized that if i had update with an australian firm i had to put region 4 and it worked..
Hope it can help to some one..

I need help with this player.
On samsung's official website, when I want to download the latest version of firmware, there is the version (ver.0.070605.0.BRINO.NP7HK.XSH)...
my first question is how can I find out what is the version of firmware in my player, and the second..with this version there is a label HONG KONG with Common language.
Are there going to be changes with the region if I install that firmware?
Thank you. -
OMG This site was so useful!
My samsung P171 wouldnt allow me to play Region 1 dvds (Im in region 4)
The subtitle hack worked for me, after alot of mucking around though lol... Yay so Im about to go watch my new multizone dvd player thanks to the people offering help on this site...
THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!! :P :P
If you are trying to change you're region dvd player to multi, this is the hack to use...
I AM A HAP HAP HAPPY CHAPPY HAHAHAHA -
Hi there, i'm from Germany - region code 2. The hack described above does not work with my P171, neither to press the "subtitle" button nor to press the "repeat" button allows me to see the region code on the screen.
As recommended I updated the latest firmware: i installed the EU-firmware, but it does not work. Has anyone an idea what i can retry -
Finally I cracked it:
Get the new firmware from samsung australia: http://www.samsung.com/au/function/search/resultList.do?searchWord=DVD-P171
Rename the firmware to: NP7CAS.rom (without the "S" my region code "2" player don't update the new firmware) and burn it on a dvd. Insert the dvd and the player will update the new firmware.
Turn the player off, then turn it on and press the "0" button 4-5 times.
Then press the "subtitle" button and - because of your australian firmware (Region 4!) - press 7, 6, 8, 8 and 4. The region code "4" appeared in the top left corner of the screen. Press "9" for multizone and then "subtitle" button again. Turn the player off and then turn it on again.
Enjoy your multizone player. -
plus_five - Thank you for posting that information. That was very kind of you.
I hope it will help others in the future who have this model. -

Hey, this was all very helpful, but here's another question for you guys..
I did it all, it all worked perfectly fine (except for the firmware update which didn't work completely, couldn't get it to actually update no matter what.. dunno why)..
Anyway, i'm from Europe- region 2 originally, and i'm now able to play multiple regions, including region 1..
Yet some region 1 DVDs still can't play- it still says that there's a region problem.
I thought there was a problem with the DVD i bought, so i tried it on another DVD player and it worked perfectly fine.
Why are some region 1 dvds not working on my samsung dvd-p171?
(and some ARE)
I even tried changing the region to just region 1, and not multi-region...
Didn't work either with those specific DVDs.
What should i do?
Thank you very much
Noa
