  1. i have googled and searched this forum a hundred times b4 i'm posting this!

I need a software that could encrypt so that when i play my videos, it ask for a password. I dont need to play in DVD player and so it can be an .exe format. i'll be playing the videos only in the computer... (many computers)

zip and rar files are out as they take too much of time decrypting. I narrowed it on CryptCD 5.0 bt a 200MB file after decrypting turns into 650MB!! which is way out again.

Could anyone suggest me a software that works and similar to CryptCD, thank you

ZIP and RAR shouldn't affect video file sizes, at least they shouldn't get bigger when removing. Video can't be compressed so the resulting ZIP/RAR is often slightly larger than the file actual file size. You can also just view the file from within the ZIP/RAR without removing it.

Except that a temporary copy is made while it's open which the user can grab.

True, but only a user with the password would be able to view the file. If the user already has the password, it doesn't really matter if a temp copy is available or not.

Commercial dvds are password protected. The encryption key is on the disc. I suppose it might be possible to write a script and embed it in the vob that would demand to call a server you set up to get the key.

Why do you need to do this? Once it is played, it can be stream saved and passed around.

This software is expensive ($175), but claims to be able to protect Flash video and prevent stream saving by requiring the use of a virtual player.

Are these videos strictly for your viewing? Set-up a user account on each computer for viewing the movies. Use a strong password for the account and place the video files in a folder set to private. Always log out after you are done. That'll keep mom & your little brother out of your pr0n when your not busy hacking at your computer.

Alternativley, place the files in an obscure directory, change the name of the files to something obscure and remove the file extension.

But the curious and determined will always find a way...

If the videos do not reside on a computer, you could get a usb thumb drive that supports password protection and keep them there. Like these:

    From the site:

"Think about it - all that personal data - your resume, email, password-files, and pictures of your girlfriend (wink) can be picked up and copied and returned before you even noticed it was missing. You want to have this data handy, but handy for you and not for that scumbag down the hall with the sticky fingers."

  8. If you are just looking to encrypt a video and then make a DVD AxCrypt is a very good encryption program that can decrypt 4GB in about 5 minutes on a Athlon XP 2000+.

You have to decide how the files will be used. If for example, you have a 100MB avi file that you want to keep others from viewing (they will see it on the drive/disc/share...but you don't want them to open it without a password), by using encryption software, that software will need to be installed/present on every computer you use to play the files.

By putting the 100MB file into a RAR file, you can password protect the file. The file shouldn't be much larger than the original video. You don't need to waste time extracting each file before playback, just play it from within the RAR file.
