So, I'm still trying to make a music video using clips from a dvd and music of my own...

    I've done this so far:
1 - DVDFab HD Decrypter: Ripped main movie. Resulted in four vobs. (worked great)

2 - Virtualdub-mpeg2: out of those four vobs, split and saved about 50 1-4 second clips to .avi format. (Chose Video Full Processing Mode, no compression and Audio Full Processing Mode, no compression. You can ask, but I did it this way with the audio, because I didn't know what the Direct Stream Mode or Full Processing Mode was for. Still don't)

3 - Virtual Dub 1.6.19: Opened first clip, then chose Appended AVI (If memory is correct) then chose save as and named it. I kept adding more clips this way to the AVI until I'm up to 16 clips combined into a single file. (About 43 seconds)

In this music video, I don't want any of the dialogue at all. How do I, if I can, strip the original sound attached to the video clip/s and replace it with my music wave file?

If I just choose no sound, then when I take it into Windows Movie Maker 2.1, it says something weird like no sound with a red mark or something. If I leave the audio with the video, then I have to check "mute" for the clip and that uses up the one and only audio track, that I was hoping I could add a few sound effects for. Forget for a second your possible dislike for Windows Movie Maker. I'm just using it right now while I'm trying to learn Premiere 6.5.

BTW, in the way I'm using the Virtual Dubs for this project, what is the difference between Audio in the Full Processing Mode vs Direct Stream?

PS: If you're wondering how I know the clips are moving along with the music. I'm listening to the music on a walkman while watching the video and adjusting (shorten, lengthen, replace or put in a varying black transition place holder, that I made from the original movie.) the clips as I go along. Whew! I know this is long, but I don't want to get reprimended for not putting in enough information.

If each chapter is an individual song/video....like an MTV style music video...then you may want to consider re-ripping with DVDDecrypter and "split by chapter".

I'm cutting up a regular movie DVD into little pieces and joining the little pieces. Then, I want to add music to the joined up pieces into one. The music has nothing in common with the content of the movie, that's one of the reasons why I don't want the dialogue for this project. Say I was using "Apocolypse Now", (sp?) the movie, contained on a DVD. Then I cut up, rearranged, and joined the "Apocalypse Now" video pieces and add the song "White Rabbit". That's what I'm doing. I'm probably not making myself clear. Just my usual self in action. Sorry.

PS: That isn't the movie or the song. Just using as example.

I forgot to mention the finished project will be 4 minutes give or take a few seconds. Yes, I plan to split the 4 minute video into about four pieces, so I can add some audio, visual or transitional effects. I like (I don't know the term) cutting hard to the next scene, not too many effects.

With VirtualDub, the 'Direct stream processing' just transfers the file, along with any simple cuts or joins you have added, with no conversion of the format. It's just an editor in that case.

'Full Processing mode' encodes the file with the codec you select. If you don't select any, it's default is uncompressed RGB AVI and a very large file. The codecs you have available are listed in 'Compression'. With Full processing, VD is an editor and a encoder.

If you filter, or crop, you have to use full processing. Also, if you have a MPEG or other file that VD doesn't have the codec for, you will have to use full processing and select a output codec. VD doesn't output MPEG, only AVI type formats.

Full processing mode/Direct stream copy works in a similar way for the audio.

If you used VD or VDM to process the VOBs, you could have just encoded them to the AVI format of your choice and disabled or deleted the audio at that point. Unless your really need WMM for your editing, VD works well for edits.

You can assemble your audio file separately with Audacity, then 'Add' it back with the completed video in VirtualDub. I use VD Mod for all that most times. VD doesn't care if there is no audio with a video file. Audacity can also 'normalize' your audio levels so they stay even between all those audio clips.

I've only used this software for audio only:
    Reaper
....but I believe it may be worth looking into in your situation.

Ok, Wishmaker, here's what i'd do.

re-rip your movie using DVD decrypter, set to rip elementary streams. this should result in a single file of video (marked M2V), and one (or More) files of audio. discard the audio if you aint going to use them.

take your wav and process it into an AC3 file in something like ffmpeggui.

load the video and audio into cuttermaran. in this, you can pick the clips you want and compile them into a 'cut list' with your audio. export the video and audio files as elementary streams.

put these streams into DVDauthorGUI and author your DVD.

now you can write these to disc with Nero or such, or you can make more videos the same way, and compile them with DVDshrink.

it's a bit long-winded, i know, but it gives you a lot of technical control.

when i've done similar things in the past, i played the relevant clips of the DVD out to a DV camera, then captured the DV tape in a full video editor (like Premiere) and edited it in that, which gives you more creative control.

    good luck!

Thanks all for the help. I think, rare but it happens, i'll do the music and any additional sound/dialogue in audacity. I was planning on playing with audacity anyway. (I've never used it.) Once I've finished editing the video in Virtualdub, I'll try to add the finished audio and skip any special transitions this time, doing away with WMM. (WMM locked up on me again last night. Fourth time in a row.) It doesn't seem to care for many, many clips. I did get it to work once for a 1 minute piece with several clips, but I can't get it to do it again. Maybe something I did with my machince?

Since I barely know how to use the Virtualdubs, (This project will be the first time.) I hesitate to try even more programs right now. The DVD movie I'm using is subtitled and english is only spoken between the two main character's, besides, I can't get much dialogue into a one to four second clip and of course, the dialogue I'd like to use is never on the any of the short clips i'm using. That's the reason I need to add important dialogue they've spoken in another part of the movie. (Just short pieces, that can span over a couple of joined clips. I guess, that's dubbing?) Okay, I know you're scratching your heads, so here's an example: Luke Skywalker (sp?) is in his ship and about to use the mechanical sight guide thinger to shoot his missle? into the deathstar, but then he hears, the now dead, Ben Konobi's (sp?) voice basically telling him to let the force guide him. Sorry, it's been nearly 30 years since I've seen "StarWars".

I do plan on the finished product to be on DVD (never made a DVD either) for my own pleasure, but am also now seriously considering a try at uploading to Youtube. I'm kind of tired of watching everyone elses creations and having none of my own.

PS: The subtitles show when playing on a DVD player, but thankfully, when I used DVDFab HD Decrypter and chose Main Movie, the subtitles were gone. Just so you know I'm not using clips with subtitles plastered on. Also, since I'm not using any of the original dialogue spoken in real time, I'm not using any of those clips where you see people's mouths moving, but no dialogue. I hate seeing that. Yes, there are parts I'd love to use, but didn't because the appropriate dialogue was missing.

Ha Ha the joke must be on me. It seems audio is the least of my problems. It seems I'm running up against a limit as to how many gigs Virtualdub will allow me to join the ripped files from a DVD. Oh, I can play 2:45 minutes of my beautifully clear video, but when I go to play them in windows media player, it slows down at a certain point (even earlier and worse in Nero Show Time player. I checked gspot and found all the experiments I'd saved above a certain limit gave a currupt AVI Header and always at 2130356156 no mattter the arrangement of the joined clips. Checked each clip, clicking frame by frame for 5,229 frames on the last one and all there. Then I found I could check this in Virtualdub without clicking. No bad frames and output plays all to the end in VD too.

Now, the question (and I don't know where to put it in the forum) is, is there a work around to this (I think it's around a 2gb) limit. If not, then I won't be able to edit and join a continuous clip of around 4 minutes. I'll have to break it up? But then how to come out with a full 4 minute .avi clip. sigh...

PS: There must be something to the files from ripped DVD's, as I have an analogue captured home movie, that's somewhere around 4-5gigs, but 19 minutes long (720x480). Also, both my drives are NTSC formatted, though I'm only using the large (160gigs, now small nowadays) drive just for video.

Am I wrong about this? Please someone tell me I'm just having a nightmare.
