Sony is discontinuing Digital8 camcorders and recent models lack desired features like:

    -Hi8 to DV format playback
-Analog Pass through to DV format

You are better off buying a used older model with these features off Ebay or Craig'sList.

Another option is the GV-D200 or GV-D800 player which has these features.

Don't understand. Is this a warranty exchange?

Must you have something that plays Hi8 and Digital8?

What models are they offering you?

Sony still has a Hi8 camcorder lised on their sel site but not Digital8. Other sites probably still have Digital8 inventory.

Look for the features I mentioned. Do your homework. I don't know all the Digital8 models.

    Some hints...

All early models supported Hi8 playback. Over time, only the more expensive models supported Hi8 playback.

None of the earliest models supported Analog Pass Through capture. It was a strong feature on mid to upper models in the 2001 to 2005 time frame. As MiniDV models came down in price during 2004-2006 this feature was withdrawn for all but the top line Digital8 models.

Recent Digital8 models have dropped both features.

  16. If that's all they're going to offer you then it's time to go over their heads and contact corporate. That's not even close to a replacement.

These are Comparisons that are equal to your original dcr-trv480........I would take nothing less than JVC GR-D250 , Panasonic PV-GS19, Sony DCR-TRV280 ( this doesn't have the touch menu basically same unit).

Insist on an exact replacement for your dcr-trv480 (or better) even if it is reconditioned. Best Buy can get one from Sony. Don't accept anything less!!!!

Yell at them that the CCD-TRV138 won't play your Digital8 tapes. You are dealing with idiots so point out the obvious.

Search the websites for the "Regional Sales Manager" for your store*. The local manager reports to this guy. Tell him you have called the local TV station consumer hot line and expect a call from them. Best to deal with one TV station. They want an exclusive.

Emphasize with the TV station that you bought a "digital" camcorder and all Best Buy will offer as a replacement is an old format "analog" camcorder. That will get their attention. The TV station consumer advocates know nothing about camcorders. If they are confused, ask them to talk to their Chief Engineer.

    * or ask the local store operator for his/her name and number.

  24. I wouldn't have accepted that one. It won't play your existing tapes and it doesn't record in DV. But if you're happy with it, what I would do doesn't matter.
